Let痴 say you wanted to spend less than $100 on 6 1/2s could be persuaded into the $150 range but $175 there is guilt and over $200 will not be considered. What would you buy? Music range is broad, but favors rock based. If that helps.

I replace my old speakers front and rear so 4" up front 6.5" rear with some Pioneer speakers. They sound fine and cost about $60 a pair.

Rockford Fosgate, Kicker, JL or Memphis audio would be my suggestions.

I did expensive speakers in my Jeep, and they are great, but if I did it again I wouldn稚 buy the high line JL speakers. Not for that money...

kicker has always sounded good to me and are priced well. They have nice amps and subs too

a lot of the motorcycle guys in Arizona use Rockford Fosgate, and they sound good to me driving in my car as they rip by at 75! so they gotta sound good in our cars..... pretty affordable from what I致e seen. They have a lot of product lines.

and Memphis audio stuff is great too. Not sure how they are priced though or too much about their products in general. But they always sounded good in my dads impala.

back in my day you used to be able to go to this thing called a store, and they had a bunch of speakers on the wall and you could actually listen to them. the SA/FB is tricky too, because the speakers are in odd places.

i have no idea what is out there now, but sometimes good speakers, like infinity references didn't sound that great in the car. you might order a couple/few speakers and try them, and return the ones you don't like.

Chuyler1 did a nice speaker system. This might be more than you are looking for though...

https://www.rx7club.com/build-thread...build-1123224/

The stock electronics are very optimized for "mid range" audio. So not only the speakers, but the amps themselves have a limited freq response. In other words, don't expect a lot of change if you just replace the speakers (unless the oem ones are blown). But if you do end up replacing the head unit/amp with modern stuff, then you will def need new drivers.

6 years ago, I got Rockford Fosgates for $50 front and $60 back. Do I regret not spending more? Nope.

I tried one of those el cheapo dual head units from Walmart. It hurt my ears with the same speakers. Now that I regretted.

So I returned it, and dropped $100 on a pioneer head unit. My ears stopped hurting.

You get what you pay for, but it is like a square root function. I.e. double the price gets you 40% better. Actually, less than 40%.

Some say that it is the front speakers that matter the most.

I have a decent Panasonic head unit, but don稚 need heavy amplification. It just difficult because I am trying to do a respectable build. But car audio people are nuts.

i,lol'd its true.... order both sets of speakers (kickers and fosgates) and see which you like.

i've been watching this series,
and its pretty clear that
a. there is a lot of stuff on some of these songs
b. you need some training to hear/process it, and i thought i was ok at this, but after watching this series not so much

(i remember in my white FC, i bought a Nakamichi deck, and Infinity reference speakers, and had those in the doors, only, and i was hearing parts on songs that i had no clue were there!)

Audio people in general are NUTS. Try asking a vinyl junky about different cartridges and stylus @ $600 each! I do know the kickers are HOT they like to be driven and sound good loud. I have no personal experience with Rockford Fosgates, but the vehicles I see with their stuff always sounds great.... 10/10 always enjoy the sound from someones rockford system, unless they play music with a shitty mix.... hate that on any speaker

IMO Crutchfield is as close as you'll get to a physical store. You won't get Amazon prices, but you'll get knowledgeable sales staff

Victoria brittish, crutchfield and JC Whitney were catalogs of my youth.

I have tried using Crutchfields virtual audition with my Sennheisers. its a interesting but not not sure how well it will translate in reality.

Unfortunately you just have to go off what their sales reps recommend for your application and the fact that they have a return policy. Unfortunately, i believe the return shipping is on you

You can't go wrong with JL. Alpine head unit running JL amps and speakers?

I'm late to the game here, but I've been enjoying my Kickers that I installed in the SA last summer, which were an upgrade from an old set of Polk GXR4's.

Part numbers on the Kickers I picked up are 46CSC44 (4" for the front) and 46CSC654 (6.5" for the rear). To me they sound pretty good, but really start to shine when you turn things up a bit. They can be plenty loud for these little cars, and combined with my Bazooka tube sub it's certainly more than enough for me. I picked up mine from Crutchfield on a sale, although be warned that the speaker harness adapter they suggest (pn 72-9300) does not fit, at least on SA's. It looks right, but the connectors are a bit too large and have no provision for the retaining clip.

Did you mount the kickers in front in the stock location and not cut a hole in the card board cover or did you mount the kicker covers after cutting a hole? These look like great speakers but I want to not have to modify the side panels that go over the speakers.

My cardboard already had a hole from the prior speakers, although I figured it was original. I mounted the covers over the cardboard so that it got sandwiched between the cover and the chassis/speaker itself. Now I'm curious what factory kick panels look like if they perhaps didn't already have holes. Unfortunately it looks like I don't have any photos of the front ones, but here's a couple of the rear configuration.

Good news on the rears is that the grills fit under the factory panels without any modification (which wouldn't really matter except that the grills are part of the mounting system). I've seen a few installs where people cut out the integrated factory "speaker grill" and always thought they looked awful. Thankfully with these (and probably other decently slim units) it isn't an issue. Also I had no clue that 6-1/2" was what we could fit in the rear. Had a hard time believing it until I got these installed. It's a close fit, but the magnet will clear the outside body panel once you've got them positioned correctly.

The front factory kick panel just has a hole and the speaker cover on the outside.
