OGTA at the Mitty

OGTA at the Mitty
Saturday, May 1, 2010: Mitty at Road Atlanta.
It was a spectacular turnout of Old School sports cars. The weather cooperated too, with the promised afternoon thunderstorms failing to arrive, leaving instead a day-long cloud cover that prevented the usual 3rd degree sunburns that come with a day at Road Atlanta.
It was no record OGTA turnout for sure, but the folks who did show up were the crème de la crème. Nothing like hanging out trackside watching vintage Ferraris, Porches, Austins, Lotuses, MGs, Jags, RX-7s and all kinds of other things race around one of the best road race track in the world for drivers and fans alike.
A good time was had by all.
Some Old Guys and New Guy Aaron, who came down from Virginia, met early at the Cracker Barrel for a hearty breakfast (you don't want to be drinking beer on an empty stomach, right?)
Then on to the track!

Photos from Kristy:
And a couple videos. I took a bunch of what should have been really excellent vids of the beginnings of the heats, Old School Vintage sports cars galore, but my camera focused on the chain link fence instead of the cars so they were too blurry. Anybody got any vids of the races?

Yep we come from all kinds of diverse backgrounds. I'm white, Mike's white, Tim's white, Holly's white and it looks like most of the rest of those guys are white too.
Hey, what do you expect from a Mitty?
Seriously guys, I highly recommend the Mitty for future events. Seeing those jags and fararri's racing around like they used to on my Stromberger set back when I was a kid in the '60's was well worth the price of admission.

Ray, excellent pics. I think I look best holding a beer. Well, actually, theres
no pictures where I'm NOT holding a beer is there. LOL!
I'll get my pics up in here later this week.
This was a great event and every night theres some drunken smooze fest
going on that you can walk to and stumble back to your tent. I met a lot
of great folks in the rotary scene.
I can't wait until ZoomFest now.

Now that you mention it Tim, not only are we all white, we are also all holding beer bottles all the time. Well at least the beer bottles are diverse, maybe next year we can get some different colored rotor heads too.
That was my first Mitty but it won't be my last, seeing all those classic sports cars in one place and, better yet, watching them go at it out on the track was fantastic. And like Tim says, if you pitch a tent and leave the driving to everyone else, it's a great opportunity to catch up on your beer drinking.
Kinda like Zoomfest with fewer rotaries and more diversity in the car collection.
We'd love to see your photos Tim! (But if I'm in any let me prescreen first).

Finally got around to getting my Mitty pics up. At my campsite we ended up with
1 Rx2, 2 SAs, 5 FBs, 1 FC (preproduction).
Datsun was the mark of the day and BRE was honored as well. This brought
out more Datsun 510s than I've ever seen in my life. The Saturday parade
laps for Datsuns filled the entire track end to end.
Heres ye olde campsite on Friday afternoon.
And of course my SA
A rotorhead from Virginia met up with us at the Cracker Barrel after breakfast
and he had a very nice tornado gray FB. His name was Aaron and if your reading
this get on here and give us some contact info.
On Saturday after the breakfast, Holly and Kristy finally found us in Kirstys
red prepoduction FC. Nice car. Very interesting to look thru.
One really sweet Datsun 510 engine bay.
OMG! Look at all the Datsuns lined up for the parade lap.
Most fanactical Datsun guy at the Mitty.

I'm definitely doing this again next year.

Great pics Tim, does those Datsun guys some justice, they did turn out in droves.
And yes, I'm adding the Mitty to my list of Annual Things to Do, along with ZoomFest and Crit's Lake House. Well worth the price of admission and even a long drive if you need to. And camping at the track saves on hotel bills and makes the drive to the track in the morning a piece of cake, I might even try that next year (even though I only live 20 minutes away).
See ya'll next year!

I never found a professional photo of me going around the track so the
ones I took will have to do for now. Expect to see it popping up all over
the forum. Ray taught me that
Heres a zoom in on the only rx7s that did the touring laps. Looking ready to go.
