I love what $80 in carpet and an hour can do for these beauts

So I recently picked up an ‘82, she wasn’t perfect but the price was right. She’ll be do for a rebuild in about 10k miles but until then I get to address all the other odd bits that need sourcing.

im about $600 into odd trim pieces and the like to get her closer to what I’m envisioning for this project. I’m buttoning up my first few days of wrenching which sadly is only cosmetic stuff as everything I want/need is backordered, but satisfying none the less.

I pulled out the aftermarket speaker units which were covering the OE cargo boxes and removed the cut plywood covered in the worst carpet ever who’s sole purpose was to hold a single amp…dead center of the trunk…why??

this red yall. My god…it’s like…red carpet red…on the maroon interior. It drove me up the wall and I’m super happy for it to have been one of the first things to go. Not to mention the speaker box was ply/2x/fiberglass was about 40lbs, and the trunk liner ply was about another 20lbs. The trunk trim piece needs to be either reupholstered or replaced…I found that I’m a salvage yard yesterday but it’s better than nothing for now IMO.

still waiting on RB for the street port exhaust to ship, and the dash skin to arrive. Need to source some A-pillar trim in maroon. About to pull the trigger on a new 12a motor with the works from Atkins, $7.5k has me thinking twice though but I think it’ll be worth the investment. Total build should put me about $17k before paint.

So, you did away with the system completely?

I admit it looked ghetto before, but what waste the space? I have 2 8” subs there in mine with 2 amps under the seats. One for subs and the other for front door 6” and rear 6x9s. 1000 watts total. All kenwood, not that that is special. **** between shifting and driving I have the passenger control song inputs on the phone. Still, nothing like running bat **** wild and a killer system that makes your ears ring 1/2 hour after. Whaaaat did you say? Lol
I gotta drum out my mods. Driving is a full time job in these old cars on high HP.
It looks better but why not use the space for something more “middle ground” than the initial set up because seats are useless back there.

oh for sure, lol yea- this system was junk…no bass and all mids. I’m going to have a few beers with my buddy next weekend and build some something to fit into the cargo boxes Behind the seats and mount the amp hidden somewhere, either behind the boxes or under the seats. All of the OE speakers are roached (obviously after 40 years lol). I’m going to reside what I can but this job from 1992 had to goooooo. The weight of it was equal to a small child lol.

yep. Be better if you had the original metal, as you can see that is raised. I took my original, eat up, metal and made a fiberglass copy, no wood, and put the subs in there. Amps do fit under these seats. I did reinforce my fiberglass with wood to mount it too. In the center and from the 2 side structural reinforcements. Not sure if yours has the side reinforcements though.

not for the box housings themselves (if there was some on this year?) but the metal that holds the actual boxes is there with loads of space under it. I have nothing for the actual trunk area, but I planned on getting something light weight to put under it to hold it flat. For now it’s just a repurposed Amazon box 🤠😂

Yours does not have the structural supports mine has. I can tell by looking at the bins. Doesn’t mean you still could not make a wood support for fiberglass if that is the route you choose. Just mounted to the floor. I will say fitting my front speakers in the door was tough AF, and tight. I would probably go with 5” in the front mounted where the oem speakers are if I did it again, because it would be easier….either way though you got to get to know fiberglass which is not rocket science. And you may have bins in the doors, which mine did not.

My threads suck for pictures. Just overlay aluminum foil over the oem partical board, then wax, then fiberglass…..then you have your new, much stronger piece to cut as you will and cover as you will.

I have no issue with adding stuff to the car so long as it maintains a factory look, which is what I’m going for for the most part…aside from speakers In the cargo boxes, But even then I may just only use one box and a half two speakers. Restomod dreams.

I primarily bought this car because of how mint it was, I know the door panels are pretty weak so I don’t trust pulling him off I’m trying to fit him back on around the speakers and destroying them. I know it can be done but I’m cautious lol
