well after putting 4.5 gal of gas in the tank and flooding the engine numerous times i ran a compression test....0psi on the front rotor and 65psi on the rear.... the towel has officially been thrown in on three monts of work..my night is ruined and i've resorted to Labbat Blue for comfort...

 

Oh man that sucks You're not interested in rebuilding it? I see you have that other thread about putting the S4 engine in...

If I could toss in my $.02 personally if you have a good S4 engine I would just swap that whole deal in, it's really not that difficult and since you've already gone this far why not go a bit further? Just throwing it out there, good luck whatever you decide to do though

 

will keep you guys updated as i prepare to swap the current engine with a good S4 engine...

me too. after all this time and effort i really hope this car turns out to be everything i'd hoped it would be.

 

It will in the end, project cars always have their ups and downs before they really come together and turn out the way you want. Keep plugging away and you'll be happy. I'm going through the same thing with my FC....

 

hopefully this is the last down. i need more ups as i have had nothing but problems with this. i pray that this engine i pick up sunday is good and that all goes well after that. after i get off of work today i'm going to repo my engine hoist that i lent out.

 

picked up my new engine on sunday. claimed 55K original miles. the engine looks beautiful. barely any grease on the housings. the hoses are all original with the original clamps and they are still soft with no dry rotting!! i'll post some pics tonight when i get off of work.

 

Nice, sounds like you're having better luck than I am with my FC, its blowing a good bit of white smoke on startup, guess I did something wrong with the coolant seals when I rebuilt it.... ugh.
Good luck though, now that you have all teh wiring etc done it shouldn't take you too long to install that thing!

 

well, as of about 15 mins ago, the engine is out and the new engine is nearly ready to go in. it goes in after i install the clutch from the engine that was in the car. i have been taking pics and plan on posting them tonight when i finish putting the new engine in.

 

got it all together last night and the new engie fired right up. it came to life and the sound was thunderous...of course i have no exhaust on it right now other than the manifold and the muffler..which can't do its job if there's nothing in between, lol. so here are a few pics of the old engine coming out:

and finally here is a short video of the engine running. i wanted to get a startup video but was so excited to start it once it was together that i forgot to grab the camera. so, i jumped out of the car and grabbed it. the video is short due to the engine being low on coolant. i shut the engine off right after i stopped the video. more pics and videos will come as i finish the car. my faith has been restored in this project thanks to a guy named Marc who sold me this claimed 55K mile engine (which i completely believe the claimed mileage after inspecting it and hearing it start so quickly and run so smoothly). thaks Marc!



i now am going to start cleaning the engine bay up a bit and i'll finish the brakes today(all i have left is the right front which needs the pads and the rotor changed and the wheel bearigns inspected and regreased...) and a complete bleeding of the clutch and brake hydraulics. then the exhaust will go on and somewhere in between, the poly bushings and new door, window, and hatch seals..

I'm glad the motor started right up.
I just welded the panhard bar in the back of the 83 this week, and then I will throw the motor and trans into it. so my project is finally under way as well.

 

Awesome that you got a good motor in. What are you going to do with that other 4 port 13b?

 

its a 6 port i may rebuild it some time in the summer and do another SE conversion..not totally sure.

I might have missed it in here, but you kept the trans that came with the car?

 

no, i used the SE trans tha came with the first SE engine that i put in. seems to shift ok. figured i'd keep the original engine and trans together. they're sitting on my garage floor tucked against the wall.

 

replaced the pads and rotor and repacked the wheel bearings on the right front last night. that finishes the brake component replacement (sans calipers). that side for whatever reason got put on hold. hopefully i'll have time monday to bleed the brakes, replace the clutch master cylinder (i cant get the system to bleed..wont even suck fluid into the master cylinder) and bleed the clutch hydraulics. i also hope to fab up an exhaust center section either monday or tuesday as well.

 

replaced the clutch master cylinder, got that bled and working well. then i got the brakes bled, and the clutch pedal is a little mushy again. must have worked some air bubbles around, so a quick bleed should solve that. i bolted one pre cat on the engine last night and ran it unitil it was at normal operating temp to check for faulty coolant seals and poor runnung conditions when the thermowax closes the thottle. it runs perfect, 750 rpm idle. heat works, all gauges work. i cant wait to finish the exhaust and take it for a drive!

 

Sounds like its getting there, i always get so impatient when a project is at this stage, its so close you just wanna go drive it haha.

 

i am impatient, lol. thats why i'm considering bolting up a crappy exhaust just so that i can drive it around the block and enjoy the fruits of my labor.

 

I love reading about these projects. Ocean blue is my favourite colour and I am leaning towards that colour for my 85 GSL-SE which is currently a dark grey.

How's the car doing these days? Got her out on the road??
