let me know what you guys decide to do, no hurry. i do have a bery good friend that lives in jersey. he drives home here once every few months. takes him about 8 hours i think.

i got the SE harness from Doc yesterday and i'm going to start installing it this morning. it looks harder than it is i'm sure. you should see how big the harness is is, lol

Yea I'll let you know what's going on, where in Jersey is he?

As for the wiring, yea it can be daunting at first, but I'm sure it won't be too complicated. Try cutting an entire FC body harness apart to make the T2 swap harness for a FB, that was a barrel of fun.... LOL

he's living in montclair new jersey..couldnt tell you where that is..

it does seem daunting but not impossible...i figure that once the dash comes out the wiring will be right there to be removed and the new harness will be installed in the exact same place...or so i hope it will fit and bent as such, lol. the daunting part wil be hooking up the correct connectors

Montclair is like 20-30 mins from me, their university was our rival lol (as if I cared about that lol)

Good luck with the wiring, I had the harness out of both my 83's while building/restoring them, its not that difficult, just time consuming and a little awkward cause it kinda snakes all over the place... I'm sure the SE harness has more to it though...

the update for the day:
got the old harness out!! got the SE harness in...most of the way. the final picture is of the wires on the SE harness that did not match up with the GS harness. the SE harness that i bought was cut and i was hoping to solder the SE harness to the GS harness. the part that was cut was the section that goes to the rear of the vehicle apart from the main harness. although most wires colors correspond from one to another (GS to SE) and i have a fsm and wiring diagram..but i stiull cant figure out what wires will correspond with each other and what i dont need...that will be my next big hurdle.

i also started cleaning the undercoating off of the engine bay's surface. really looks nice under that crummy undercoating.

Great progress Dave. Thanks for the pics. Your engine bay is gonna look great with the coating off.

When you take off the coating in the engine bay, are you going to get rid of the bunny rabbit?

Congrats on the car and the color. I LOVE that combination as well.

I would look into a Weber or Delorto carb setup. The SE engine is great and reliable. The Fuel injection system is rock solid if it hasn't been messed with. Yours has been thoroughly FUBAR'd.

Since you are transplanting it from another car, and you're not even sure if the engine is good... Well, you get the picture.

i didnt even notice the rabbit like figure in the undercoating, lol. i'm really hoping the engine is good. its supposed to have 75K miles. i looked in the exhaust posts with the exhaust manifold off and spun the engine by hand and looked at all of the apex seals and they appear to be good...of course, we could have side seal problems or coolant seal issues...dowel leaks or oil control ring failures...i dont even want to think about it...

i wanted to try and stay with the fuel injection because i really love the SE's engine. i guess at best, if i cant figure the wiring out, all i would need to is get the rest of the SE's harness and not worry about using any of the GS's harness. i guess this project is a test for me. i've done so many pther things and direct engine swaps that i'm confident in my 7 knowledge and i'm out to do something different. plus i've waited a long time to find a nice L6 car..i really wanted an L6 GSL-SE..thus my 7 heart gets the best of me again.

thanks Mike! the undercoating actually comes off pretty easially..i nearly suffocated myself last night in the garage on brake cleaner fumes..i didnt have either the front or rear garage door open due to it being in the 20's here and i had been running my 60K btu kerosine powered jet heater...i was cleaning the engine bay and doing some last minute wiring and felt like i was buzzed up on alcohol...but i really dont drink alcohol....then it hit me..the fumes. i called it a night at that point and came in the house. about 15 minutes later i was feeling alright and close to normal(if there's such a thing for me..my wife may sing a different tune, lol.)

Nice find man. I don't know how well the brake cleaner is working for you, but there's a degreaser called Simple Green that works phenominally. In the summer I cleaned my entire engine bay with it. Took me about 2-3 hours and two rolls of shop towels but I got her clean and shiny for the first time in 2 years. May want to try some of that. Spray it on, and wipe it off.

i love simple green see the first pic in the trio that i posted last night. you'll see the trusty bottle on the wiper cowl. brake cleaner melts the undercoating much more effectively than simple green on the tar like crud. but i use siple green for most other jobs. i buy the stuff by the gallon , lol

Simple green is definatly the ****, but when its real nasty stuck on crap like what you're dealing with brake cleaner eats right through it, and at about $1.50 a can for the walmart brand you can't go wrong lol.
Looking good on the wiring, one question though as I've obviously missed this somewhere, are you simply switching the whole cars harness over to that of an SE or are you splicing they GS and SE harness in some way. Only reason I ask is because I see those cut wires in the last pic...

Ah I see, shouldn't be too terrible then, I'm sure the rear harness is pretty similar between the two. You're soldering I hope

damn this makes me feel bad now...i believe my car used to be that color, atleast the engine bay still is...and under the carpet haha. ..i'll make sure tomorrow...in my defense the car was already black primed and it looked like **** (not that new paint looks better :P)so i started sanding it down then realized that they'd primed over the original paint but we'd already gone too far to just leave the original paint haha...oh well i'll make sure tomorrow tho, kinda cold tonight ..l6 right?

The main question on my mind is....

How do you get the dash out? The only write up we once had lost all its pictures when whatever was hosting them stopped.

Awesome project man, best of luck to ya. I'll be following this for sure.

Jon. i got the dash out by slowly removing the necessary parts and bolts and screws until it came out. really wasnt too bad. the hard part now is routing the new wiring in the identical spot the old wiring was.. its still challenging and has tested my patience a few times.

Ah, probably another fan of IoTus's old L6 Turbo SE.

Keep in mind that simple green is corrosive on aluminum. It WILL tarnish the aluminum lines, housings, fittings, etc.

From the Simple Green Website:
The aqueous-base and alkalinity of Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner can accelerate the corrosion process. Therefore, contact times for unprotected or unpainted aluminum surfaces should be kept as brief as the job will allow - never for more than 10 minutes
