Buying an '85 Rx7

I'm looking at buying an 85 rx7, built in 11/1984. The biggest issue I'm having is getting a good value on the car to know what to offer. It's metalic blue grey, the black trim has eroded some and the metal is showing through, has the original engine, manual transmission, approx. 140,xxx miles, the car was repainted in areas, but not properly, as it is flaking off with the same color underneath. The exhaust is leaking somewhere under neath towards the middle, rust Bad but surface rust underneath can be seen, probably some wiring issues with the headlights and antenna, help me out as best you can, thanks.

Rust doesnt seem too bad. If its complete and runs decent offer $1500. Plan on putting money into it though on all maintenence and wear and tear items. The trim paint is a common issue. A good sanding and self etching primer with satin black trim paint will make it look good as new. Exhaust gaskets are $10 a piece.

That's what I offered and she is insistant on 2000, it runs little on the hot side after a while she said, the heat shield for the exhaust is gone, the washer fluid sensor is broke. I was planning on restoring it. And have been looking for a car to restore for a while.

I would walk away. Theres probably more rust and bondo than its worth, especially at that
price point. Looks to me like it was hit on the left rear or something because that taillight and
the metal look odd to me. And that paint peeling speaks to the rear having been resprayed at
some point. I suspect it was rear ended sometime during its life. Bet there bondo all thru the
rear sheet metal.

This is a PA car, so rust is going to be the biggest issue. Based on the wipers its been sitting out
in the weather quite a bit.

I'd offer 1K at the most for it or walk. Theres better out there for whats shes asking.

I'd be worried about it running on the hot side. Take it for a test drive and get it up to temp and then let it idle in her driveway and see if it overheats or loses water. I could be a simple t-stat but at least this is a bargaining chip.

Take the car for a test drive and see how everything works and feels.

Its obvious that the car is an S model. It has been repainted and the muffler is not original. Would like to see wheel well pics and engine bay pics.

Do you know any maintenance history on the car? The car appears to be straight. What is the owner asking for the car? It looks like a good car to buy and restore and enjoy!!

Ok, so in the original post it says rust should say rust not bad, engine bay is not very clean and I did not take pics, but the surface rust in the bay is comparable to my 2011 Hyundai DD, so that did not worry me, the exhaust she told me had been replaced, and a teacher at the technical school here had the kids respray the car, which is probably why it was not properly done. the wheel wells were clean and thus I did not take pics, for a restoration car my dad valued it at 1200, but he also has not much expertise in these cars. She did say that someone backed into it with their truck hitch and hit the plastic light plate in the back and there was a replacement sitting in the hatchback. I personally don't see the value at 2000, simply because of the paint work and whatever could be wrong under it. With a standard kbb value at around 3500, if it need 2500 in paint/body work than its not worth 2000 especially f the engine overheats and may need replaced. We did drive it, and seemed to run fine, but sounded kinda awful past 4k RPMs and thus I didnt push it, with how hard it has been to find one, I am not sure if that is typical.

Also the interior was in very good shape, but the door panels were reupholstered and that was quite botched.

She said that she has never had to change the brakes on it, oil changed every summer, as she has had it for 11 years and only put 10xxx miles on it, Rotors were in very good shape on the front and had drums on back so obviously that would have to be taken apart, she had to replace a throwout bearing, clutch lines, and clutch while she has had it. The wheels do need redone as well but they are original.

According to her the car came from Maine and was originally used as a summer driver between a summer house there and a winter home in PA due to the good gas mileage. She is a teacher and from the way she spoke the previous owners had been as well.

i'd be happy with that for $1500, give or take.

i don't quite understand why you want to buy the car to restore, but are worried about the paint finish? sure you need to know what you're getting into, but i think you'd be expecting to fix/paint stuff. not trying to be mean, i just don't get it

To me it is worth $2,000 all day long. The body lines are clean and it looks pretty nice and original. It should clean up with just a little work. Don't lose this nice car over a couple hundred.

Because I don't see how it's worth 2000 if it may need an engine and a paint job, because I cannot do the paint myself.
