I have a '79 SA that has a '01 camaro v6 dropped in. What class, if any, would this qualify for?

 

i would think you would run in a GT class or maybe even SPO but im not sure you have to read up on the rule book for SCCA

 

In SCCA, the only classes your 7 would qualify for are regional catch all classes. Some regions have SPO, some have ITE. Like mentioned above, I would contact your local SCCA and NASA chapters, and find out about local classes and also order a rule book (GCR for the SCCA). Even though your car may fit in one of these classes, you will still have to ensure that you have a cage and otehr safety equipment that meets the rules for that class.

These two classes can be tough because there are some really fast cars that don't really fit in some other classes. I have seen wild turbo porsches, old vettes with what is basically a left over can-am engine, AWD DSM cars, big block cobras, and all kinds of stuff in this class. You ight not win, but it should give you a place to go play.

You may even qualify for SPM if your local track has that class. Kinda like SPO only not as big of motors

 

I don't know about autocross but Jim's right on here. You must run the rotary engine in Production(EP), Touring(RX-8 only), and GT(the 7 runs in all GT classes)
In TX we run ITE, you see old school Supras, newer twin turbo ones, and 3rd gen RX-7's, basically a run what your brung class. Of course the cars must have passed tech and have a log book.

 

SP is probably your best bet... but be preparred to have big mirrors because you will get passed.....big time

In MiDiv, ITE isn't the "catch all" class it's made out to be... the car has to have been prepped to another sanctioning bodies rules AND meet the IT cage minimums. I doubt that many rules allow alternate engines from other manufacturers.

Good point, I've never seen cars with alternate engines, but then I've never paid much attention to SP or ITE rules. I know it's been beat to death here but your best entry level road racing is Spec7/Pro7/IT7 or whatever it's called where you come from. It runs NASA and SCCA. JMHO.

 

Autocross would be E-mod

In NASA that would be Super Unlimited (SU)
SCCA- as was mentioned, depending your location the catchall classes vary.
