I hear you can "sell" the car to your friend and get it signed off, and "buy" it back. Not sure if this still works anymore.

Anyone know anymore detail about this?

Don't you drive an N/A? Sounds simple to me. Back to stock, get it inspected and you're done. You're goin to need some cash to pay it off.

can't sell to private party and wash your hands of the matter...doesn't work that way. Car must be sold to a "dealer" to ensure the car will actually get fixed. However, if you know any "dealer" friends, that's a different story.

btw, junk it.

ask the homie johnny with the supra.. he got pulled over and got a ref ticket for his NA-T and had to go through all this crap too and he still has his car.. after putting it back to stock of course

but its true if your car is NA its shouldn't be as bad as getting caught with an illegal swap of some sort

either way its gonna cost some $$$!
GOOD LUCK MAN

You can not sell it to a private party As Is without fixing it because the car got tagged at DMV. The buyer can not register it too without going to a referee so legally he can ask for his money back. Put everything in stock and pay the fix it ticket. The new law states that you are liable to a 5000 fine if the referee finds that you took out the emissions on your car. I got a speeding ticket in May and the CHP asked me to open my hood. The officer told me that they had a class on how to spot a modified rotary and know what years turbo cars was built. I had my engine replaced last year to a stock one on my gsl-se from a streetported one with a sidedraft weber because of this new law that took effect last April this year.

This is my understanding:

The ref is basically used to sign off to the court that the car has been fixed. Same idea as having tinted window and getting the ticked signed off. Now you can always opt to just pay the offense and not have to deal witht he ref.

Has that changed?

Ive had 2 back in 2006. SR20 swap s13 with hks front mount, bolt ons etc. Would be such a hassle to swap back to stock. Wait for ticket in the mail, will have a bail amount.. Go to court and say you will pay bail, then tell them you need a payment option because you can't pay all at once . That is the easiest way to do it.

You still have to go to the Referee AND pay the fine of at least $400. You are not even allowed to drive the car until it passes the referee. It is not just about getting a smog hookup driving a modified car these days. The State is broke and raised all the fines this year and will impose the maximum fine on all violations if needed.

lol

too bad you can still get a ref ticket for a pre-smog vehicle. they only are exempt from smog testing but doesn't give you a get out of jail free card for any modification, the car still has to be unmodified.

they usually just don't bust our ***** on pre-smog vehicles like the 80's cars they do on. just like they avoid pulling harleys over for loud exhaust!

gotta love states where there is only a sniffer test or the real lucky ones with no testing at all. but i feel safer knowing that a state only looks for certain things for smog, like here in NV you can do just about anything to your car so long as it still has EGR, cat and smog pump... if a bridgeport could pass HC then you could pass legally(maybe with 5 cats!). haha

OP, just put the car back to stock, there is no good reason to yank all the emissions short of the cat and intake(which you can get legal intakes) for. the n/a run better with everything intact anyways unless you have a PP and standalone. so you went through all of this for what? 10 crank horsepower? *sigh* you'd be better off leaving it bone stock and hiding a bottle in the car somewhere or live with the power level and buy a turbo car down the road.

The courts don't let you make payments anymore, they will give you time to pay but they want the payment all at once.

I.E. "you have six months to come up with $1000"

if you get it passed and take the pass to court you just have to pay the case dismiss fee of 25$. and the 8.75 you have to pay to the ref. if you take it to the ref and fail they will give you a paper saying why you failed and your trying to fix the problem so you can drive the car around. if you can't fix the problem just pay the bail like hypertek said. it's going to be around 200-400$

Exactly. My REPU has never had it's hood popped by a copper. They usually smile at the truck. It's a gamble still.
