i took it for the first time to get tested and it failed on the 15mph in NOx and everything else was ok. had the stock cat, stock motor, everything hooked up. the car use to be auto and i converted it to manual using the n3a1 ecu. the car is a cali car so it has a plug on the egr. it also idled at 1k.

took the car today to get it tested again. i changed out the ecu to the original n3a4 auto ecu and plugged in the black plugs to the other boxes. it still failed but i dramatically dropped the NOx down. the HC and CO went up and passed the gross polluter limits.

what else can i do next to get lower HC and CO? should i replace the o2 sensor? its running rich.

read up about denatured alcohol and ethanol, getting the cat hot, ect...

One thing I have learned is to get the catalytic converter as hot as I can .. Take a freeway drive before you get the car smogged. The reason : http://www.catalyticconverter.org/failure/index.htm . Here is some go info also on high NOx : http://www.catalyticconverter.org/ne...rter-&News=216 .
Good luck

Exclamation

ok now i started to do some research and saw this as an opportunity to do some real life trials to see what would work...

i changed out the o2 sensor and found some vacuum lines were rerouted wrong and was quick to fix it. i wanted to see what denatured alcohol would do so i went to go get some. took the fd, did a 1 to 5 and did the test. car smelled great! but it failed. lol the CO read 0.00 but HC's went up just a bit over the limit and the nox in the 15 mph shot wayyyy up. still did the test with the same cat, auto controls still plugged in.

in this run i changed the cat. this one looked in better condition than the previous one. i didnt put any additives on this test, used the n3a1 ecu and i still left the three black plugs connected to the auto control boxes. still failed horrible. the nox levels in the 15 and 25 looked great so i know that the egr system was working. mind that i still havent done an oil change yet or changed out the spark plugs. i also had some boost issues that seemed to go away if i turned off the car and turned it back on.

my court date to show proof is on april 18th. and i was running out of time

i didnt know what else to do and i was running out of options. since the first test was close enough to pass i decided to reuse the n3a1 ecu without the 3 black plugs for the auto control boxes. i didnt add any additives in the fuel, still didnt change the oil or spark plugs and i messed with the tps a bit. took the fd again to do a 5th run at trying to pass the reff. i noticed while it was on the dyno that it took less than 30 seconds to do each speed, when the test ended i thought that the machine or the reff aborted the test. then the reff guy told me that he had never seen any rotary pass smog in the 10 years that he had been doing the tests.

looking at the results i barely made it. lots of stress went off my chest. now i just have to go to court and show the proof and pay my 25 fine...

I pass all the time, albeit the last time by the skin of my teeth as well since they tightened the specs. Bastards.........

More like "Goat-poking baby-eating **** bastards," but yeah.

SO looking forward to my next smog test, at the end of this rebuild...

the smog guy said he had never seen a rotary pass in the 10 years he's been working? is yours the only one he has ever tested?

i run a rotary in to get smogged about once a month(even when i was in cali)... most run through without any issue, others need minor tweaks or have underlying issues like faulty worn out cats.
