^^^ ewll I coulda told you that....

One of your coolant seals broke. likley the iron tht holds it in place broke which causes the coolant seal to move allowing water to pass through. I had this happen to me on one of my RX-7's. (the one I sold to jesse, then he turned it into the orange monster we all know and loved.

It will get worse, it will get to the point like my car was. I would let it sit over night and try like hell to start it in the morning. once it would finnaly start, it would blow smoke so bad for maybe 60 seconds. (I guess it would be steam more then smoke huh? in my case it got to the point that the gasses would push through the engine and into the cooling system. I couldnt drive but 20 miles or so before over heating.... man that sucked.

when I pulled that motor apart the front iron was the failure.

Jesse, you were invited... everyone was. but it was a Saturday and you work Saturdays. thats why I didnt bother asking you again. Next time I promis to ask you to be my date.

My dad thought that one of the seals internally might have started leaking into the engine block itself, burning off the leaking coolant, which would explain two things:
1) the rough idle at startup (sounds and acts like a 2 stroke)
2) the inability of myself to find any leaking fluid in the engine bay

So my dad, after explaining the problem to Louie from Rotary Reliability and Racing, where we've been taking the car for its rotary-eccentricities that the car has that only a rotary mechanic would know about, confirmed that my dad's theory as to the leaking coolant was most likely correct. Louie said he would rebuild it for $4000, but I've heard great things about this Lucky 7 Racing shop, where I've been wanting to take the car for a while. Does anyone have any first hand experience, or heard good or bad things about any local shops in rebuilding engines?

I could really use your guys' help and advice in this area. Any and all criticisms / suggestions are welcomed with open arms. Thank you in advance!
I really enjoy doing business with Lucky7! Good guys, good prices, and quick turn-around. You should most def hit them up for an estimate on your repairs. Might as well throw in a street port while your at it

I would say to go to Lucky 7. As a matter of fact I just got my Fc back from them a few weeks ago, they did very good work. It was fast and I found myself saving money by going to them than other shops in southern cali.

Thank you all for your advice. I will definitely check Lucky7 Racing out, I've never heard good things about them, only great things.

Actually that was my next question

My car is a daily driver to school, and it has only failed smog once in the past 21 years of its life. I want it to pass smog again, and retain somewhat respectable gas mileage.

So would a streetport drastically affect my mileage if I'm getting about 19-20 on average right now? Also, I've got a completely stock FC (minus those mufflers, thank you sir), so would I need to upgrade anything while going to a streetport? Keep in mind that my car is an N/A as well. Would I need a full exhaust or just a catback, or would stock be ok? Also, do air intakes really affect the performance of the car at all? The stock system takes ambient air from outside the engine bay, so its already a cold air intake as it is.

I've looked into these matters before, but I always seem to get the typical "ricer-response" of "yes, upgrade everything". I can't imagine that Mazda or any other manufacturer would not take full advantage of their R & D programs and not find that the intakes they have released in their stock cars produce the most power. If it were that easy to upgrade and get power, why wouldn't the manufacturer release a similar cone-intake on their automobile?

What I'm looking for here is an actual subjective opinion based on experience. I'm not trying to upgrade the sound of my car at this point, I'm looking only for performance in relation to cost and smog legality.

Once again, thank you all for your expert advice!

Thanks for the first hand experience! In your best estimate, how long do you think I have until my car becomes unusable or unsafe for the engine? I don't want to destroy the rotor housings so that I may reuse them for the rebuild, yet I still need to get to school this week.

I got my wheels sandblased at Lucky7 and although its not really a rotary job, they were super cool about it, and cheap. Cool guys, go talk to them.

I had an HKS mega-whatever green thing on my car for a long time, and it was pretty... usless. I figured the 1hp i lost by taking it off was worth the $189748 ticket I could have got with it on.

I've got a question: I just got my tax return lol and i want some new break rotors, who do you recomend?

Well I called up Lucky 7 Racing today and talked to them about my car. I'll be dropping it off Monday morning for a basic engine rebuild. While they're at it, they're going to streetport it for me. If all goes well, I'll have it back in two weeks. I know I'll be counting down the days.

If all goes well I plan on coming to the next rotary meet on May 10th with my dad in his S2000. Would anyone have any objections to bring a Honda? I won't have my car back by then most likely, and even if I do, it definitely won't be done with the engine break-in.

Thanks to all you guys for your advice and help on the subject matter!

I'd buy an S2000 if i could...

What are they charging you for the rebuild? I'm expriancing the early stages of the same problem.

USD $ 2500 for a basic rebuild, this includes all seals and springs. This does not include rotors or rotor housings. They will reuse your current rotors and rotor housings as long as they are in good condition (I'm sure mine are, only 150,000 miles). For the added streetport, only $ 350 more, which I thought was a bargain. These prices include parts and labor.

Louie at Rotary Reliability and Racing in Santa Ana quoted me USD $ 4000 for a basic rebuild, whom I've been giving my business to lately. I think I'll lean more towards Lucky 7 Racing from now on, depending on if this rebuild goes well of course, which I'm not worried about.

So all in all, I'm pretty happy on the pricing. When I first got the $ 4000 quote from Rotary Reliability and Racing, I was pretty shocked. I knew I had seen lower than that, so I started checking some sites, including Lucky 7, Pineapple, and Atkins. All of those were about ~ $ 2500.

I have no problem with you showing up in an S2k. it is a rotary meet, but if you cant make it in a rotary, then a piston car is just fine. you are still a rotary person. )

which means that we are NOT looking to go to Honda forums or anything like that looking for more cars or people. rotary people are the ones we are intrested in hanging out with.

make sense? :^D

Oh believe me, I completely understand. Its my dad's S2000, and hes not into tricking cars out, hes into keeping them in pristine condition. Hes the one that bought my FC ~21 years ago from the dealership in Nor Cal.

It looks like Lucky 7 will have a spot opening in their garage this Monday. I have to call them Monday morning to confirm, but its looking good. They said that the minimum amount of time it will take if everything goes smoothly is 2 weeks. I am very excited to be getting a basically ~new engine. When I started driving that car, it already had 138,000 miles on it!

These next 2 weeks are going to be really tough without my RX-7. I'm already anxious to get my engine break in finished and over with.

I'm looking forward to the meet this Sunday, it looks like a lot of RX-7 guys will be showing up.

We added a 7 to our family.

This will be my dad's first meet as well, too bad we won't be showing up in a rotary though.
