RX7 Drag Racers in San Diego?

Just wondering if anyone drag raced their RX7 in San Diego? I've been at the last three or so qualcomm stadium racelegal events and haven't really seen any. Also wondering if anyone had a decently fast drag rotary down here?

the thing about rx7's/rotorys in drag racing is that it takes alot of money to keep them on the track, something always breaks n/a and turbo's alike. there good for a couple of runs 1/8th and 1/4 mile then back off untill next time

I have a 91 Auto Coupe that I swapped a piston motor into. I always wanted a T2 when I was younger but don't know anything about working on rotary engines. I finally drove a buddy's T2 a while back and thought it was cool as hell (weird feeling when they start pulling so hard after 5-6k) and decided I'd do a swap with a FC.

I just never see any RX7's down there racing. Only one I ever saw was a pretty much stock S5 NA car. There used to be someone in a FD rotary that I remember being pretty fast but I haven't seen him in a while. I know there are a some really fast rotary RX7's down here and wouldn't mind meeting up with them.

There's a pic of my car here.. first one on the second page

I like to say that my FC is in it's natural state. (On ramps in my driveway.)

Thanks for posting the pic up. The slicks worked pretty well there, I actually was cutting some 1.6x 60fts launching at 2300 rpm.

I actuall have more fun there than I have had at any other dragstrip because of the big variety of cars and large amount of spectators. Usually if you ask people in line what they run you can get a good race and the general atmosphere is more like a car hangout spot than the usual drag strip. They really are starting to prep the track well too.

Did you bring a FD down there?

If your thing is drag you might look into a linelock instead of thrashing the brakes by
power braking. you want better times. let some air presure out of the rears 16 lbs. and add air presure to the fronts, car will roll more easy. can't hook up ? add sand bags for traction. you trailered the car there it looks like, slicks no back plate. V8 fits
good in the 2ed gen. imagine a big block ???????

i raced at this event in Indianpolis on the 1/4:

and raced several times at Gateway in St Louis.
At the 1/4 mile tracks you get all kinds of cars as well so I'm not sure what you mean. I raced an 03 SS camaro that wasted me there. Theres alot more room and the whole track is lit, plus you see all the times rather than just who beat whom.
I went to qualcomm back when i first moved here last year, theres alot of variety but my races were mostly against pickup trucks (???????). i did go against a new mach1 on slicks which was cool, he beat me by .3 secs.

I kind of meant how it's easier to line up against who you want and more of a fun atmosphere almost like the old street races. At Carlsbad, Sacramento, and Infineon Raceway it's a lot harder to line up against who you want to, there are fewer spectators, etc, etc.. kind of geared towards the older guy instead of the younger approach at racelegal. I think last time I raced my friend in his supercharged GTO, a SR20DET sentra, a lightning, etc..

I know that Speedmachine is supposed to have a bad *** FC Drag car and I wouldn't mind getting a chance to race it.

Yeah maybe 1/8th mile, you were barely starting to wind 3rd gear and it was over. 1/4 mile and hit the power band in 3rd and i'd bet you'd get a mach1,,, without slicks

No trailer.. it's a Daily Driver.. swapped slicks at the track. Notice the temp tag in the rear glass.

Linelock is a PITA to hook up on FC's.. there are dual outlets for the fronts off the master cylinder. I would have to hook up two solenoids or one backwards and I just didn't feel like dealing with it.

I think the rears were working best at about 14 psi that night. After I finally got over my fear of breaking the rear axle/driveshaft again (first time out lost the rear u-joint which caused some damage) I launched it semi-hard (leaving at 2300 rpm) and was able to pull some 1.6x 60fts. I know if I come out harder next time I might be able to get some 1.5x 60fts which would be nice. The hoosier slicks I had this time were working a lot better than my regular MT ET Drags.

So whats under the hood ? 350 GM ? or a 327 w/solid cam would be better. Don't tell me you've got a boss 302 in there, that would be something. A 5.0 w/ T5 ?

whatever it may be that rearend won't last, it's tough but not V8 tough. time to narrow that nogular ( n cast) iron 9' inch and hook up a 4 link out back. it would be a good idea to keep the driveshaft safety hoop in too, just because....

Just a stock LS1. I just want to get it into the 6's there with a mild heads/cam package. The V8 guys have proven the T2 rear axle to be able to put up with a lot of abuse. I preload the rear and it seems to be fine. I know some people have cut 1.4x 60ft times on a completely stock T2 rear. If I have to re-do the rear suspension/axle I'll just retire the car.

I was kind of interested in finding out what kind of meets there are in san diego, ive been going to qualcomm for a while with my first gen MR2, but i bought a S4 N/A that i was interested in bringing out too. I have another friend who's my manager at the shop i work at and he was also interested in finding a regular local meet to attend hes got a S3 N/A widebody with a 13b swap. We wanna get as many rx7's to show up at qualcomm as possible. that would be sick.

There's an import meet in clairemont every tuesday I think I am going to show up this week for that.

Here's a pic of my motor right after I got the car together. There's been some minor changes since then but it's about the same:

Very cool, fuel injection. yep, that rearend evan a TII rear can't take the torque that engine produces for long. i bet that car is fun to drive, one of those " i can't stop driving it " type of fun. an engine like that would be cool in a boat too.

I think the rear end is much stronger than you think. It's a 8.5" ring gear. The weak links are the front mount and the stub axles but other that it's a really nice setup.

Anyway I am going to be racing again this weekend. I'd like to see some other RX7's down there!

The info about it is available here:
