Basically consists of removing the entire system and installing new R134a compatible o-rings and other misc components as well as possibly a newer style compressor. Majority of the money is for labor and not so much as parts cost if they only quoted you the $450-$500 as the compressor would run an extra $250 at least.
R12 can still be gotten and done, it shouldn't be that hard to find a shop or even a local person who can re-fill your system with a gauge setup. No need for a machine except for evacuating the system and making sure there's no leaks by keeping it at 30 inHg of vacuum for about 15 minutes.
The polar shop that you spoke of is I believe polar bear ac or something like that, they can do R12. We buy our R12 from them when we need it for our own cars.
Also, if your thinking of buying R12 and a gauge setup don't waste your money. If you don't have a 609 AC license they won't sell any R12 to you. Just an FYI for you.

i dont need to buy the whole system i HAVE a r12 system in my car i just need freon in it thats what i was told. And Fairfield/Vacaville area i called around and they all told my just get it retro for 500 i mean i dont have a problem with that was just wondering if anyone knew a spot to get it a little cheaper. And i think thats the right name polar bear ac sounds right ill have to ask my friend about the name again thats where he got his 7 refilled.

Yes !
Use the autozone/kragen/etc.. retro kits so that your AC blows nice and cold for about a month then takes a **** because it's not "real" R134a...
Seems that you guys should do some research about automotive AC systems and freon as well as the oil that is used in the AC system to lubricate the compressor...
There is more than 1 type of oil used, most of which cannot be mixed as they create things such as acid which im sure nobody wants in their AC system...
If you do decide to convert you can either A. replace everything which im sure you won't want to do as it costs way more than $500.... or B. make sure they evacuate the system as best as possible for 15 minutes minimum, don't flush the system if your not going to replace the hoses with R134a compatible hoses otherwise they will leak, make sure they use PAG oil so it can be mixed in the R12 system otherwise your f*cked and hope it works well for you.
I'd just go to polar bear and have them check your system out and re-fill it with R12 and be done with it. Less hassle and no worries about how long/if the R134a conversion will work.

You have an R12 system not a R134a compatible system....HUGE difference if you know anything about automotive AC work. Hoses and o-rings are different, oil is different, freon is different of course, the desecant bag is different...
