Exclamation PLEASE HELP: Moving to LA, need advice on car storage/garage options

Hi there, I am in need of some advice and/or guidance. I am planning on moving to Los Angeles, near downtown, in August '08. I refuse to keep my FD parked on the street. Gated parking is bettter, but what I'm really looking for is a garage.

I'm looking for a 1-2 bedroom apartment close (walking/biking distance) to Union Station in LA that has some kind of garage space/safe parking/place to work on my car. Almost every apt. complex I've lived in was pretty **** about having me work on my car in a parking space, so a garage is the better option. I am hoping that one of you folks out there in LA-land have some kind of idea on where to look. I'm planning on spending about $2500 tops for rent.

If any of you out there have any ideas, I'd love to hear them. Thanks in advance. Rotor on!

^^ You guys crack me up. 12 pack of Heine? I wish. I could use a beer right now as a matter a fact.

$2500/mo... that's absolute upper bound. Heh, if I was rich I wouldn't live here, I'd be in Tahiti $2000/mo is a little better but it's still a shitload of money as far as I'm concerned. I'm splitting the rent 1/2 way with another. Just looking around at places in LA it's so friggen expensive. I want to be as close to the train station as I can, so that's why I upped my tolerance on the rent.

I was looking for houses, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of them for rent that aren't even more expensive. It would be nice to have a yard, but that doesn't look like it's going to happen.

new apartments near union station are gonna be on the high end. If you and your domestic partner ( can afford that, you may as well look along Sunset and Figueroa.

Lincoln Heights FTW! Probably get something for less than $1200 a month there.

I'm renting a 2 bedroom house w/ garage in a decent part of Pasadena for under $2k. If you really care about the a place to work then you're probably looking for houses/condos for rent. There are so many houses for sale that aren't moving because prices are in free fall that a lot of investors are becoming accidental landlords. Renting is a MUCH better deal than home ownership in today's market so a lot of folks are stuck...

you need to enroll for http://www.westsiderentals.com/Default.cfm it's expensive but it's the easiest way to find/rent an apartment in LA.

they have a ton of apartment listings and have the market cornered on finding aprts.

If you're coming in from outa of state you will be suprised to know that landlords do not know who's moving out until 30 days before the apartment will be come available. SO, wait until a month before you move here to find an apartment -- this is very different than the other places that i've lived (Chicago, Ohio, Tn, etc.. which know in upwards of 2 months in advance)

Hey thanks guys, very much appreciated. I'll look into it, there's a slight possibility I may be moving to San Diego too True about the 30 days in CA, real estate over here is retarded right now. May be time to buy pretty soon if you're willing to stay put...

rent.com is a GOOD website but not as thorough as the westside rental site. IF you're just looking for an apartment anywhere then rent.com is good but if you have limitations and/or specific requirements (as he seems to have) the westside rental is well worth the money imo.

mdpalmer,

LA, specifically around the downtown area is very expensive. Developers have built so many high end condos and lofts which raises the average rental prices all around. It completely sux.

The FD is a haven for theives. Becareful around here.

Postwhoring isn't considered a job ******. I've seen the bandwidth usage under your profile and all the sites you've hit aren't work related. AHAHAHAHAHA.

Hey Gene, almost, but my "domestic partner" is working on one. I've been trying to get out of San Bernardino since I started working here almost 3 years now. This place blows. I want to come back to SD.

Thanks for the advice. Nice car in your sig, looks like a C6 Yes, I know the prices have been driven up so much it makes it very expensive to live. And I hate theives like any one else.
