Anyone know any good body shops that have worked on FD's in the Bay Area. Looking for a place that has worked on rx7s. I've had too many bad experiences with fitment issues with the front bumper and was wondering if anyone knew any good places. I know it may be partly my fault at times too for buying poorly made replicas, but I would like to find a place that may suggest different bumpers too so that proper fitment would be ensured. Thanks for the help guys.

Any other options?

I'm ready for a rebuild on my FD and got a quote of ~8k from Rick's (yikes). I also called Mr Mazda and they say they don't do rebuilds? I also refuse to go to Rotorsport because of my bad experience there.

Any help is truly appreciated.

Thanks!

if you can deliver the engine to the shipping port it usually can cost as low as $70 each way to ship an engine(a little over twice that if you have it picked up from a business address). PM me if you are interested in a rebuild estimate.

Go ahead and pull the engine yourself. I have NEVER really worked on the FD before, I don't have the best tools, but it is actually very simple now that I've done it once, I could probably pull it again very quickly. Not only is it a lot of fun, but you really get to know your car. I pulled my engine, shipped it to Howard Coleman to get a rebuild, and then dropped it back into the car. Started up first time around.

Nothing against Rick as I had nothing but great experiences from him when I brought my last FD to him for usual problems, but the motor didn't last 2,000 miles from the previous owner (I bought the car with low compression knowing it needed a rebuild). When Howard tore apart the motor, he said the milling of the 3mm was horrible (I don't know if Rick did this or outsourced it) and one rotor was so bad that it is now an expensive paper weight at home. The other one I was able to sell as I went to 2mm rotors in my current motor.

The important thing is to make sure you find a reputable builder to do your motor. I've never dealt with Karack/Ben but many many people on here can vouch for him when he was in the Bay Area. I actually was trying to setup an appointment for him to do my rebuild, but he is EXTREMELY busy as he was in the middle of moving too and wanted to finish up his other projects I would not question sending my motor to him if needed.

In my experience, I've dealt with Rick at Rick's Rotary, Paul at Rotorsport and Mike at Mr.Mazda and all three shops have been great and all three guys know what they are doing as far as maintenance/troubleshooting but I would find a guy who has done multiple rebuilds when coming to your engine.

Good luck with your build and if you're local, I'd love to help out a fellow FD owner.

I definitely would recommand Karack for a rebuild. I recently just got a rebuild from him and couldnt be happier with his craftmanship. Everything was TOP NOTCHED. His communication was great, kept me updated.

Rotary Planet in Jackson

I am in Placer County and my 89 GTU needs a rebuild. Has anyone ever used or heard of the work done by Chris at Rotary Planet in Jackson? http://www.rotaryplanet.com/ I spoke with him last week and he said he didn't have an engine lift and I would have to pull and deliver the engine. Makes me a little leary when this is his business, yet he doesn't have his own lift.

do a search for "Chris Greene" on the forum and you will see a few things about how chris operates. i'm not going to bash him, much, but he has been evicted from the last 3 shops he has rented and a few 7 owners would like to see the color of his blood, after he basically stole thousands of dollars from customers and never got the work done.

last i heard from him, he was trying to sell me labor for refurbishing apex seals... heh, that's a new one to me. glad i never went in and took up space in his shop when he was trying to find a tennant to split space with, he would have been trying to get me to do work for him for free while he would be off doing lines.

used to be a great rotary expert from what i hear, and he does know his way around them but his mental breakdown has put him out of business and i'm surprised he is still trying. he blamed it all on David Hayes notorious 3 rotor FD conversion but he had torn things off of that car that never needed to be touched, he was dipping something during that build that caused the breakdown(we all know it was his ex-wife) yet still sais he was in pain from working on the car so hard, yet doing unecessary things to it and pulling parts off of other people's cars as well. i got an FD that was recovered from his shop, missing the front bumper for a no start condition... now why would the front bumper need to be removed and disappear for a no start condition?? other customer cars were found blocks away on the street, locked with no keys and parts missing after he was evicted in sacramento, while others even i don't think ever recovered what he was working on, such as the guy with the motor from washington who contacted me to see if i knew anything about him or where he was.

Thanks Ben. I wish you were still down the road from me. Shipping the engine to LV is quite a task but I am getting closer and closer to just doing that and avoiding the risk.
