My 90 TII failed the smog test today in Fresno, CA.
Here are the numbers:
(HC)
15 mph: Max=121 Ave=31 Meas=44
25 mph: Max=96 Ave=20 Meas=34
(CO)
15 mph: Max=0.76 Ave=0.10 Meas=0.01
25 mph: Max=0.65 Ave=0.09 Meas=0.01
(NO)
15 mph: Max=807 Ave=237 Meas=990
25 mph: Max=746 Ave=199 Meas=815
Everything else passed except: (Ignition Timing: A99) (System Malfunction Light)
This really sucks, because I only got til the end of this month and I work Monday-Friday 9-5 so i never have time. I am also running low on cash at the moment. I need to find out what is malfunctioning, but I dont want to pay $50 for a diagnosis. Can anyone tell me how to check the engine code the other way. I searched and couldnt find it. Also I dont understand the ignition timing, why would did that fail. So what could cause the high NOx. Right now this is my setup:
S5 Jspec motor All stock including exhaust with precat, main cat, split air pipe connected. I did a recent oil change too with Royal Purple 20w50 spark plugs have about 3000 miles on em.
N370 MAF
S5 TII Air Pump
N370 ECU
N370 Boost Sensor
N370 Harness
N374 BAC
JDM ACV
JDM Intercooler and JDM Upper Intake Manifold and throttle body

okay well the faq says according to my results, I have an EGR, lean air fuel ratio, leaks, run-in converter, use larger converter. Well, the S5 TII doesnt have an EGR. lean air fuel ratio, cant be, because I am running off the stock ECU with no mods. leaks? Vacuum leaks or Exhaust leaks? I don't know what a run-in converter is. And last but not least, why would I need a larger converter when im all stock, and if i do need one, what bigger converter is good? And the FAQ still doesnt answer my ignition timing problem. and i cant find how to check for engine codes without a diagnostic computer.
sounds like you are running lean, has the air fuel ratio vairable resistor been tweaked???
either that or your main cat converter is failing
