Your are right - you don't get it
"I don't get it why buy an RX and convert it to a V8, Wouldnt that be a Mustang then, and if you want to convert what do you want for the old roteries you taking out???"
First of all, a V8 RX-7 is not a Mustang, it is more of a Jap Corvette. After all these years, Chevy is building a Corvette that is the equal of exotic European sports cars costing 5 times the price or more. I personally prefer something smaller than a vette, but larger than a Miata. I spent a total of about $10,000 for my project, and it performs and stops very well. Of course a 1st or even a 2nd generation RX-7 will never corner and handle like a late model vette. But I had fun building it, and it is a total sleeper - I have really surprised a few people out on the freeway.
The basic problem with the old RX-7s is one of economics - when the engine dies, assuming you pay someone else to do the work, you are looking at $3500 for good rebuild, including the installation, and you will likely have more invested than the car is worth. Because of the nature of the engines, it is analogous to a piston engine if you had to always buy a new block for overhaul, as the rotor housings are usually bad and the cast iron parts are often worn beyond limits. Mazda aggravated this situation by charging very high prices for the parts, for which they have a complete monopoly. You will pay the better part of $1000 for a bunch of parts that will fit into your coat pocket!
Some people who have the skills can buy a running Ford or Chevy donor car and have the whole conversion done for $2000. I spent more because I never had a hot rod V8 and wanted to learn about them.
