Ok the 4 rotor I was told about by a member on here named scathcart, He said to go to www.pineappleracing.com you will have to inquire there.
Personally I like the M16 over the M14 but hey thats just like everything else personal preferance.
Mizeru: So what your saying is Kobayakawa is wrong? The cheif engineer of the Mazda RX7 is a crack baby? He is the one that said any thing bigger or heavier than the 13B would require a stronger frame, bigger brakes and heavier chassis and so on. Well lets fire that dumb *** and get you a job inside Mazda
Also on my quote on the motor, I should have been more clear I am assuming most people looking for the serious speed probably already upgraded their turbos and what not, and figured before scrap all that they could get a solid rotary with up to a 5 yr warranty all I saw on your Ebay and the Summit motors was 1 and 2 yr warrantys. Also on the Summit motors I have the Jan-Feb issue of Summit all I can find for motors is on page 88. The motors I found there only have aluminum intake the rest was cast. Here is what I found though. In summit.
350/350HP by Recon $3200
496/500HP by Recon $5300
496/550HP by Recon $5800
509/540HP by World $7500
These motors all had cast heads and block.
I agree if you bought a car with a blown 13B that was not modded and wanted to do the motor and Turbo upgrades all at once it would be spendy. If however the motor currently in your car was still strong and you did a turbo upgrade it would not be so bad, If you already upgraded everything and then the motor was to go I dont see why waste all that when you can get a pretty mean rotary built for 4k and have a 5yr warranty with it.
Plus doing the V8 swap especially with out the aluminum block is gonna be spendy because you will probably have to strengthen the frame and beef up your suspension as Kobayakawa stated. Either way speed is $$ no matter what path you take.
You guys are right I am not the smartest on all this, especially the rotary and imports,as I was until last may a chevy guy. Last may I bought a N/A 86 SE and it has a down pipe and all the simple mods. Currently I am looking at buying a 87 TurboII with a street port on a new motor. I am just waiting for my income tax refund.
Since I am not the smartest I have to take the advice from Mazda,when they talk about what would need to be done if they would have put in a bigger motor. I feel they must know the car better than any of us. As they are the creator. 2nd for advice I feel I must listen to the rotary specialty shops and their suggestion on what upgrades to do and what order to do them in. You guys are great in here really,but I do not know who knows what and who is blowin smoke and who knows their ****. I hope ya can all see my point their.
Pretty much everything I have spewed out in here is from what I have read or been told from the Rotary specialty shops. I have friend who is now 28 and he had a RX7 since he was 16 and I know he is still learning everyday. So people who say to me and my whole family own RX7s and all that really does not validate your advice on which is the best way to go, when it comes to RX7s. The specialty shops I feel are in business for 2 reasons. 1 they love RX7s and know what they are talking about, the 2nd reason is the same for any business.. profit.
I am sure the arguments will keep on and on in here, I have finally decided this is starting to be a waste of my time. Anyway I hate to be a ******* so good luck to all, even the V8 crowd
Peace Keeper: Are you going to boot camp on June 22nd? Well if so stay motivated recruit! LOL If you don't know what I am talking about you will in june. Step on the yellow footprints, always say by your leave sir when walking behind a drill instructor. Also don't worry in boot camp you will never get done in time. You will never have your rack made in time or have your boots on quick enough and so on. Don't worry man it won't be your fault it's all part of the game. Even if you moved as fast as humanly possible they will still say it's to slow. Also have fun washing your laundry by hand with a scrub brush You will however like the line training, O-course, Rifle Range and so on. I could go on and on but you probably get the pic. Yes I have been to Japan, I was at Futenma on Okinawa. To be honest that how I got into the imports. I would watch them race down by the sea wall. It was good times. The Japanese girls are beautful and as a society they are very polite and respectful. I also was at Cherry Point NC, NAS Millington TN, and Camp Pandleton for my last stretch. I love San Diego it was good times there as well.
Also I was not looking for a 500HP V8 as I know it is possible and easily possible. Bogus File on here said he knew of a lot of people driving 700HP N/A 350s on the street. Personally I have never seen it in person. Anyway Sayanora I am done with this thread.
Just one more thing getting the Rotary re done is also keeping Americans employed as that is who is working at Mazda Trix, Mazda Racing and Rotor Sports and so on.

What part of "I OWN A V8 RX-7" don't you understand? There is no frame strengthening needed! I know PERSONALLY 4 other people with V8 RX-7s and their cars have not fallen apart. My conversion is 2 years old and still running great! My STOCK rebuild SBC 383 puts out 261HP and 338.6 ft-lbs to wheels dyno tested. That's 300+ flywheel HP and 400+ flywheel torque...more than enough for this daily driver.

ANYWAY, good luck to you! I hope you find what you are looking for in the rotary.

My Opinion...



The Renisis is the best we have for putting the latest technology in the RX-7. Tuner shops in Japan are already building bolt on turbo kits that take it to over 600 HP!! No idea on reliability yet, but If I were to replace the 13BREW in my RX-7, it would be a Renisis and it would out perform any current V8 for power and weight.

My 94 Twin is the tightest, most fun car I have ever owned. I felt the same way about my 88 vert until I purchased the 94.

These days I like to take the 88 out on nice days here in the south (but I know those honda can kill it easy - and that is annoying, so I have convinced myself that the 94 is for go and the 88v is for show), and I enjoy driving it, especially the openness of the cockpit.

Alas, the engine is getting tired, and after driving the 94, the 88 is definitly a letdown.

I had thought about installing a 4.6L(?) Mustang engine. I like to power potential, and I LOVE the sound of the exhaust.

The longer I thought about it, the more I thought that it would be a "shame," not sacreligious, nor a crime, but simply something not quite right about putting a V8 in my "Rotary Experimental # 7."

So, I thought again and decided to look into a 3rotor replacement. Something that would give me the power, and would still be a rotary. This has turned out to be not so good an idea because of the cost of this conversion, and the cost of maintenance of this "unique-to-the-US-market" engine. (I can barely get parts for either of my US Spec 7s.)

Now however, Mazda has solved my problem by bringing out the Renisis. I see this as the perfect compromise... Still a rotary, yet a lot more power than my poor 146hp engine.

Yes, it won't be as strong as the V8 (unless I can find a turbo kit), but hopfully, it will fit right in, will keep the natural handling of the vert in tact, and will freshen the car.

Any chance one of these engines will go for less than 4 grand within the next 2 years?

Its not in the newest issue, its in the one that came right before Christmas, it says overnight by Dec23rd on it.
Page 46 in that book, Hardcore racing products.
By the way- you can go to a GM dealer and order bowtie blocks, 16 degree heads, high compression pistons, basically order and assemble an entire engine

You can get over 300 HP out of stock ports with the right turbo. Properly tuned (it WILL require a stand-alone EFI!) it will be as driveable as stock and pass emissions. I've personally seen (and ridden in, and wrenched on) a ported, daily driven, 425 RWHP 2nd gen that was as driveable as stock EXCEPT for the clutch, and passed Texas emissions. The only thing you had to worry about breaking was halfshafts... which would be true with a V8 swap of equal power too.

Not really.... if you use an Automatic transmission your drivetrain will hold up much better than a TII of equal power. Also, a rotary requires higher RPM to get a desirable launch(especially with slicks) than a V8 does. All in all if you have a good diff mount, your rear should hold ok up to 450HP. As for a 300+hp tock port rotary goes..... I believe it can be done, in fact I have heard of it being done on a couple of occasions. If I were to take that route I would definetely do a street port. Some people have had alot of success with 400hp 13bs. It is not as easy as just slapping a T-04, intercooler, and a stand alone on though. There are other issues that need to be addressed once you reach that HP level. The stock housing can only take so much abuse. Just be sure to get good quality gas.

anyone know the weight of a 1uz?

i have one sitting in my garage that i think im going to mate to my t2 tranny, then throw it all in!

im off to google. i will report my findings

edit:
from what i read, they are 400-450 lbs without a trans. not too shabby.. compared to the 337 lbs of a 13b. im assuming a 13bt would weigh about 400 lbs, if not, damn near there.

FYI- shipping wt on a 13B-REW engine block is only 210 lbs with flywheel, waterpump housing & waterpump, & oilpan.

Heres a 3-rotor we built, complete engine with turbo exhaust manifold & intake manifolds attached- weighs just 322lbs.

damnnn,

im assuming the 337 for the 13b is got all the stuff on it (ps, belts, etc).. but gawd damn that is light..

on another note, my uz is going to be itb'd. soooo it will be very basic in terms of the mechanical side. no a/c or ps and its going to be a track rig so i dont have to worry about smog egr crap blah blah...

i got the the motor, auto trans, and ecu for 400 bucks and i was told it was pulled from a running car (its gettnig rebuilt anyways). and im not really a rotary fan, toyota motors for me.

You guys do realize that until about 5 posts ago this thread was NINE years old right?

Any rx7 chassis will handle relatively big power (500-600 rwhp) just fine. Keeping 50/50 weight ratio with any of the aluminum LS motors is about as simple as relocating the battery.

ive read about 5 pages and was laughing the whole time... the only thing i was going to say to this is putting a v8 in your rx7 to me it just makes the car look and sound weird as they pass by. ( I always think that dont sound right looking behind them for the big v8) I love my high revin 13bt and i love my rumbling v8 lol but when you put a v8 in a import you get a De Tomaso Pantera lol its a car with 2 sides to it easy simple engine with Gucci good looks lol now we are doing it with imports from japan its the Asian sensation with some v8 rumble.

I just dont get why not buy American (besides they havnt made anything really any good for years now) I mean we had the style game for years (60s-early 70s) then we took a jump off the Golden gate bridge and started making crap cars..... god i hate what has happen to are cars.

this is more of a rant (or mindless typing) now i guess lol

I get the "sound weird" bit, but they look the same, unless someone put a giant blower out the hood or something.

And this is a fairly old thread, which just needs to be left to die. It's part of the move of relevant V8 information to this section. We're done with the bickering/arguing here. Useful or friendly discussion (from either side of the fence) from here on out (not saying you weren't being friendly).

It's like a norotors party in here!

I've got a 2J swap I'm working on. I know that it weighs more than an LS but I hope to weigh it when it's complete and, in a fashion similar to this thread, dispel some of the idiotic notions about it "destroying" the car, similar to what this thread did for the V8s.

Of course, maybe it will ruin the balance and handling, but at least I'll have objective data.

I need to do this with a turn key LS1 ECU harness from intake to oil pan.

Brian whats the turbo, and everything else needed to run it in the car weigh?

I weighed my turbo 12a setup before my swap began, and complete with turbo/header and oil cooler still attached it was 375lbs, using my shops 1k lbs hanging scale, the lexus 1uzfe v8 im puting in the car, with alternator, manifolds and misc stuff still on it MINUS a turbo yet, was 405lbs.
the weight of the turbo(s) will be insignificant to the power they add, and any no important car balance has probably already been corrected by adding the 8.8 rear end and rear mounted battery.
