T56 vs. Stock FD 5 Speed
T56 vs. Stock FD 5 Speed
How do you guys like the feel of the T56 compared to the stock FD 5 speed? I really like the feel of the stock shifter for the 3rd gens, I also like the feel of the Miatas shifter. I drove a 6 speed 96 LT1 Camaro before and didnt like the feel of the shifter, but part of it could be that is was also a fairly high shifter. Are there any differences between the newer Camaro transmissions and the corvette transmission as far as shifter feel etc? How much taller is the T56 shifter in an FD compared to stock and are there any aftermarket shifters you would recommend. I don't really care for the mechanical feel of B&M shifters etc.

Damn, it would probably be alot of work to mount a t56 in a FD. A while back I rebuilt a rear mounted t56 on a new vette. That is a badass transmission, triple cone synchros, beefy internals, just plain badass.
Oh, wait a minute. I did think of that.

I got a billet shift arm (shown below) from RPM Outlet (link below the image, if anyone's interested) which fits the LT1 T56 Pro 5.0 shifter base perfectly. The shift arm which comes with the LT1 version of the Pro 5.0 is long and straight and angled off to the driver's side. It would put the shift **** about even with the top of the stereo, I suspect. This one sets the shifter lower and back a bit and shortens the throws. As you can see in the second picture below, it should put the shift **** just about at the center (shifter is in 2nd gear in the picture) and maybe a couple inches above the center console, which should be just about perfect.

I decided to go with the black leather '00 Cobra R shift **** shown below, because it's subtle and looks stock, but has the correct 6-speed shift pattern on it (see inset).

But that was before I tried both in the car. I just assumed that the '03 Cobra shift **** would look too gaudy, but it doesn't look that bad at all. Still, I didn't really want something that looked like I was trying to call attention to it, and it does stand out in an all black interior.
