Starting My Conversion

Just picked up a 302 and a C4 transmission today from a family member. This will be in a first generation RX7.

I will be getting the Granny's Speedshop conversion kit. The basic kit.


What radiator will I need for this motor. I assume it will be cheaper to buy this separate.

The motor will be built up some with a mild cam and a set of aluminium heads.


Goal is to get the car into the low 8.00's in the 1/8 of a mile. Car will have a simple roll cage and in truck fuel cell.

The rear will have be a ford 8.8 kit from Grannys as well. (later date). What gear ratio will get me in this time bracket and be decent to run on the street.

The motor is a carburated engine, no NOS and would like to stick with wheels that will fit in factory wheel wells.

Good luck with the build!

I doubt a 8.0 in the 1/8th will be hard to achieve with a well chosen top end, odds are you will go faster. Mustangs can run that with fewer parts and more weight. Cars set up for 1/8th track normally run steeper gears like 4.10 and steeper.

4.10's would be about the steepest I would personally go on a street driven car with a C4. An old setup of mine included 4.10s and a C4(3000 stall and manual valve body). That thing was sitting around 3000 rpm doing 60mph. Great for in town, but going on the interstate was hell, pulling almost 4000 rpm to stay with traffic.

Thanks for the info. I live in the country and I doubt this car will ever see a interstate unless it will be on a trailer heading to the race track. (will trailer the car when racing it)

Picked up the motor and tranny today. Tore the motor down and it is in great shape. Cylinders look great just one minor mark on one cylinder. Not enough to worry about. Can still see most of the swirl marks. Rod and main bearings looked great. (will replace while in there) Will hone and rering the bottom end.

the top will be a http://www.summitracing.com/search/brand/summit-racing with 60cc pro comp heads. (not the best but in my budget)

New balancer and roller tip rockers. Topped off with a Victor JR intake and 700 Holley Double pumper. Hoping to get around 300 HP.

What do you think. Goal is to get in the very low 8's in the 1/8 on foot brake 4.10 gears in a ford 8.8. With slicks that fit in the wheel well.

DO NOT GET GRANNYS KIT, its a POS. Their FC kit is proven their FB kit is garbag, see the 84 build thread in sig for countless issues...

A full kit was ordered, pan that was said to work wouldn't work a 500$ holly pan was needed. The trans mount doesnt line up and the driveshaft is a pos. Save your $$.

I am doing a very similar build after my 2nd rotary blew up. I had no problems with the granny's basic kit plus master cylinder upgrade. My Driveshaft cost me $170, so don't buy grannys. And for a radiator I am getting one of Ebay that is the same size as the grannys one but is only $140, I can figure out my own mounts. I'm going run the stock GSL rear end until it breaks and then see about replacing it. I need this car back as my daily driver soon and am in school, so therefore, broke.

Goodluck with your build and don't give up despite what anyone says. It'll be worth it. :-)
