engine has nothing to do with getting insurance on the car. It askes to catch brakes, lights, exhaust and a few other things. But nothing about engine

I'm pretty sure you're wrong about this. In many states it is illegal to put an engine other than what was originally sold in the vehicle. If your car is illegal it obviously won't pass inspection. You may be able to squeak by with a 20B, but I would think a v-8 would be obvious, especially one as recognizable as a LSX.

OK I guess from what I have read it's ok as long as the engine is newer than the car, and retains all of its emissions devices. Does that sound right? I don't want to complete the swap only to have a problem getting the car inspected.

as you stated earlier it depends where you live. You can put any engine in any car as long as the engine is newer than the car and the engine has all of its ORIGINAL smog equipment. This is why you have to get an engine the year or newer than yours, cause emissions were federal regulated by year.

yes, that is true the motor has to come from the same class of car (passenger car, you cannot use a truck engine).
the motor has to be of the same year or newer than the vehicle its going into.
you must have all related smog equipment as the vehicle the motor came out of. cats, egr, computer, check engine lamp, evap system, purge system
you will need to provide the vin of the car the motor came out of (maybee not necessary but help full)
TAKE SOME PICS OF THE INSTALL AND WHERE YOU MOUNT THINGS, THAT WILL MAKE IT EASIER TO PROVE THAT YOU INSTALLED THE SMOG CORRECTLY
it can be made street legal and it isnt to hard to do

alot of states don't inspect vehicles...
Minnesota inspection goes like this:
Lady at DMV - "to your knowledge, is the original emissions equipment installed"?
ME - YUP.
while thinking: Hell No!!!

In California it goes like this
Then engine has to be the same year or newer...
You can go from carb to fuel injection, but not fuel injection to carb!...
You cant put a heavy duty engine in a passenger car..like a water pump deisle .
The engine has to remain all of its stock emission's equipment...
Car has to be certified by a state referee, then issued a C.A.R.B sticker
Might be a couple of other things but thats the major stuff.

Friend was put in jail for that...at least using the tags off his other car on his rx7. Complete BS if you ask me. ;[ exactly why the LS1 is the answer to my problem. Which is why I want to know about others in CA who've done the swap and had the paperwork done

Anyways, just wanted to know what people who've done everything properly have run into problem wise and such...I know BAR and REF a new engine is a PITA
EDIT: Carb sticker doesn't cover stripped emissions, no cat, fmic, aux injection, etc lol I wish
