FD Cowl Hood Complete (56k no way)

We finally finished my hood. We are in the process of making some more to be sold to other V8 Rx7 guys over on torquecentral. The car doesn't have an engine/transmission currently, so don't mind the 4x4 ride height. The front bumper is also just resting in place to get an idea of the look and fit. It really won't take much tweaking to get it fitting 100% perfect. Anyway...on to the pics...

Hey Tim, do you guys happen to work with carbon fiber?

I have a carbon fiber hood and I was wondering if it'd be possible to do that to it.

I can provide pics if you want, let me know!

btw, looks real good.

We've never worked with Carbon Fiber...I've had a couple of people ask about making one of these in carbon fiber. To be honest, I really don't want to invest the money in materials and take the chance of it not coming out right. After we've sold a few and recouped the money that we've already put into this project, we may play with making one out of carbon fiber and see how it turns out. I wouldn't want to try to modify your existing hood though, we would just make a new one out of carbon fiber.

*bump* for a really sweet looking cowl-induction hood. (reminds me of a TVR)

please. . . only take this as constructive criticism. . . would it help to have a scoop much like the scoot hood as in the front? i know some might think it to be a bit ricey like that, but it would also take away from some of the obtrusive manners that this hood offers. i know you were trying to keep the hood looking more like the stock hood, but it isnt. . . and it is obviously cowled. maybe putting a scoop in the front would break up the lines of the cowl a little bit.

maybe someone could photoshop one on there just to see how it might look?

I'm not too big a fan of the Scoot hood. I knew not everyone would like it. There are about 10 people on the torquecentral board that are wanting to buy one, I'd be happy to just sell that many and be done with it. Its definitely unique...and it looks better in person than it does in the pictures. I really like it, and thats really what matters most.

Thanks for the comments,
Tim

i figured as much. . . the reflection from that really nice paint makes it a little hard to "see" how it really looks.

i can understand the deal about the scoot hood. . . i feel the same way. . . just thought something up front might contrast enough to take the bulky feeling out of it. hehe, maybe slap a mazda emblem on it!!!

at any rate, you have customers, and thats what counts. good luck. . . and kudos to a great build quality. . . as well as finally getting something out for all the v8 guys to play with!!!

I hope it was someone in NJ, so I can see what it looks like in person

I think it's about as unobtrusive as a cowl that gives over 3" of engine clearance could be. Most Ford and GM hoods have MUCH more "obvious" cowls with the available aftermarket offerings. Probably not many people are used to seeing a Mazda with one - it doesn't look bad, but it's definitely different.

Not sure who in NJ might be getting one but at least one guy in MD is on the list because he needs one to clear his carbed setup. If it doesn't clear it'll probably end up on my car. If it does, we may look at buying a couple more, one for mine and one for his other FD.

i certainly agree. again, im not bashing any efforts at producing a hood that could help a lot of guys. . . this one is nice. i was just pointing out that it could "less" obtrusive if something was there to beak it up a bit. though, im sure it looks A LOT different in person. they always do, and of course. . . hes taking pictures at a low level. standing up and looking at it from an average guys point of view changes everything. thats all. . .

Thats probably why it looks so bulgy. I took those pictures with the idea to show the V8 RX7 guys how much clearance it has. I think I might take some pictures at a regular stance and post those as well. You'd be surprised at how "oem" it looks. Anway, I didn't take your post negatively...I am always open to constructive criticism.

Thanks,
Tim

I agree with that too. Looking at previous pictures (before it was painted) there were a couple shots where it looked like it barely gave any clearance at all. From certain angles I bet you don't really even notice it.
