GTUs Dyno Day: 159HP, 121TQ!!
Yo,
Well, it was bound to happen...time to visit the Evil Bitch Queen of the Universe: The Dyno. *grin*
Dana (Rotary Racer) installed my new S-AFCII and it was time to tune in what we call, "The Gameboy Advance." We went to Dynolabs (www.dynolabs.com) in San Ramon. Ray helped us get the car on the dyno and ran the machine. He was very knowledgable and fun to work with. I drove, Dana played with the S-AFCII.
Now, here is my dyno graph I did WAY back in the day:
This was with my 6ports wired open, HKS 50mm exhaust, Racing Beat downpipe and presilencer, pod filter. 140RWHP, 115RWTQ. You can see how it gets pig rich up top and the general nastiness of the curves.
Now, fast forward to yesterday. Pineapple sleeves, ported TB, ported upper, middle, lower intakes, Mazdatrix True Dual exhaust, pod filter. Remember how I called the Dyno the Evil Bitch Queen of the Universe? Here's why:
145.8RWHP and 121RWTQ!! Only another 6RWHP from all those mods! AAAAH! I wanted 150RWHP at /least/. Crappy, embarassing. But...I got another 6ft lbs of torque and the torque curve was much flatter. You can still see it going HUGELY pig rich up top. Dipping down into 10:1 on the top end! Okay, time to play with the S-AFCII. Time to earn your keep little Gameboy Advance. Check it:
VICTORY!! That damn little electronic box just got me almost another 15RWHP!! Kuuuuuuuuuuu! You can see torque stayed the same, but look how smooth the curves are now.
Here is the first and best run overlaid:
You can see how much better the curves are from where we started, and the AF ratio. We tuned pretty conservatively...staying around 13:1.
For the curious, here is our settings, we really loaded all the NE points up towards the top end:
5600....+2
6000....+1
6200....-4
6400....-6
6600....-8
7000....-10
7200....-12
7400....-14
7600....-16
8000....-18
8200....-20
8400....-21
I have all the dyno runs in the Dynojet format, PM me with your email I can send them to you.
The car drives WAY better! Some serious pull up top, I'm totally stoked. I can't believe how well that little S-AFCII did! From dissapointment to stokedness with a few presses of the button.
Props to Dana (Rotary Racer), I might own the car, but it is his too.

how many runs did it take you to gain that much?
i'm tryin to figure out how much time i'll need on a dyno to get my 15whp
you think there is any more to be gained with the safc on a TII? help me out kevin!

all you pay for is the dyno time and the use of a wideban o2 sensor. you can do whatever you want with that dyno time and the use of that o2 sensor. i think you could have the dyno people tune it for you, but i think i'd rather do it myself.
damn wut kind of rims did u have when u dyno'd i can't get 160 and i got afc 2 and full exhaust..i think i mite go single so it flows better...and find lighter rims cuz i had 17's on and i dind't know they weighed 40lbs each soo that took alot of my hp numbers away
i always assumed your car was streetported and wasn't too impressed with the numbers. not in a "i dont respect your car" sort of way, just in the "i hope my N/A pushes more than that" way. so, in retrospect, if that car is on its stock ports, than those are some very decent numbers. hopefully i'll be happy with the numbers my large streetport will put down after i get the car to BDC and break it in. *soon*
I'm telling you guys!! If you don't go to a standalone of some sort, you'll be limited to around 180ish rwhp. At that point, the maf is wide open. Trust me, I've been there. All the port in the world will only go so far....

180ish would be fine. believe me, i'd love a standalone. hell, if i had one i'd have a bridgeport comin soon, not a street. with a standalone, i'd be aiming for 230 or so to the wheels. mainly i want more to the wheels than the rated stock flywheel horsepower (160).
what was your peak power, pp, and where was it made at? if impressive, maybe give a few details. is 14.25:1 all that eye-popping? i dont really know what to shoot for either. i've been told by a builder that he (back in the day) tuned carbed rotaries to 14.3:1.
i get confused between stoich and atmospheric. i believe stoich is 14.7:1 and atmospheric pressure is 14.5 psi (average). is it strange that the numbers are so similar? or is there a correlation?

what would that be on a (dynojet?)?
am i wrong or could he take a bit more fuel out of there? looks like he could add more at 2.7ish. other than that it seems he rides around 13 and mid 12:1s.
