Update on my FD race brake mods

Here is a link to pics of my current progress with my FD3S single turbo
conversion, mainly brake, clutch and flywheel stuff.

The brakes, AP racing 14 inch front, 13 inch rear will all fit within a 17 inch
rim. The comparison pics are with stock front calipers, pads and discs.

These should be "adequate" on a car weighing under 2300 ponds wet.

The fuel system pics show the Holley low pressure lift pump, the fuel
swirl pot, and the big Bosch Motorsport high pressure pump.

The clutch is 5.5 inch, ultra lightweight, titanium cover twin
plate. The dual, bias adjustable brake cylinder set up replaces servo
and the ABS is removed. Car is RHD Japanese import spec, 1993.

Chris,

Pretty serious stuff going on in that garage of yours!

We'll need to do something about those oil drip stains on the floor!

Good luck with your Rx7 project!

Man, 6 piston rules! I hope those big discs don't put a damper on your unsprung weight too much. What are you stripping from your car to make it 2300 lbs? You've got a serious project! Good luck with everything dude!

We have only moved to this house in the last 9 months, I was going to paint the floor, but never got around to it. I have to earn a living in there, too so some dirty work goes on at times :-)

Thanks, a nice battleship grey finish would look nice, bring rollers and paint, when are you coming <VBG>?

Cheers!

1.5 pounds heavier than stock! Those AP discs and ali bells are pretty light for diameter and width. I was worried about that myself, in fact i could have gone bigger diameter still, inside a 17 inch rim, but I think that would be overkill The car is fully stripped inside, no PAS, ABS, servo, A/C or heater. Lightweight rear mount battery, single turbo, blah blah. I am pretty sure it will make 2300 finished. Being a beer lover I NEED to save weight in the car itself, drinking water and eating salads is NOT an option <G>

Thanks for the kind words.

I should be able to finish the rears later this week, early next, and I'll try and psot some pics then. The bells are at the anodisers, being hard plated, so i haven't even got them here. I have had to do some trickery to get the calipers on, 2 piece brackets in fact. Otherwise i would have had to weld bracket adaptors onto the uprights, meaning a damaged upright could not be replaced by a stock item. Anyways, I'll post ASAP. Cheers.

Can I ask what those copper lines are for in the early pics?&nbsp I hope you're not using them for brake lines???

They are brake lines, but not copper, they are Kunifer brand cupro nickel pipes, as used on Volvos and other things, been using it for years, easy to form, but not subject to work hardening and subsequent failure like plain copper tube. But thanks for your concern, it's understood!

Chris, one question. The rear rotors, are they 25.4 mm or 28mm thick, or even larger ?

330 x 25.4, no need for thicker, they won't have that much work to do, and heat to dissipate. I went for the diameter due to the upright shape, it was easier to get the caliper out away from the centreline.

Chris,
I figured the same thickness. Not alot of room to work with back there. Did you through bolt the bracket to the hub carrier or thread the bracket to recieve the fastener? Also, are the hats of the shelf components or did you custom make those too?
I want very much to tackle this project and try to do it on the "cheap" if that is the right word for it. I was considering , for cost effectiveness, porsche 28mm X322mm in the rear and 322mm X 32mm in the front. They are reasonabley priced and work well on my friends 993 C4S. His car is also 500 lbs heavier than my 7 so i figured it would be more than enough. Ive pared my weight down to 2660 and i still have the stock seats in so i figure with a new sparco and no pax seat id be in at 2600 even.
Thanks again Chris

I tapped the holes in the upright and fastened an ali plate to it, then tapped the ali plate to take radial mount calipers. It was all a bit tight and uses countersunk cap heads for clearance. I'll post pics in due course.

I made the hats, nothing suitable off the shelf and i wanted the brakes as far inboard as possible to give a lighter wheel (also custom made).
