The stock wheels are squeeze cast, so it doesn't seem like the roughness would be from sand. But that is beside the point...

The only shiny stock wheels I have seen where chromed. I am not sure polishing the stock wheels will get you a mirror-finish if that is what you are looking for. It would be a lot of work, and there will be pits and stuff in the aluminum that will preclude a perfect finish.

You'll need to clear-coat the wheels if you do polish them, or the surface will oxidize quickly. My polished intake manifold, piping, etc. only looked mirror-like before I installed it. It gets dulled during the install and then from general life under the hood (coolant, dirt, etc.) it dulls more. And that is stuff under the hood - I am sure wheels would get ugly even faster without some protection.

powder coating is the way to go. AWESOME finish, and it wont chip like paint will.

Also, the wheels are already painted. You need to get the paint all removed, then powder coat them.

I have seen a set of polished stock wheels. They really didn't look very good. The chrome ones are much nicer looking.

I would get them chromed. You can probably get them done for around $200 for the set.

There is now coloured "clearcoat" power coating available. If you polish the aluminum first, you get a metalic colour.
