Question upgrading my 4 lug brakes

i have an '86 luxury....four lug phone dials!

i want to upgrade my front brakes to either a larger brake kit, or just some sloted vented discs. my problem is finding quality brakes for a four lug rex. i can get two five lugs from my friend i think so would it be in my best interest to get five lug hubs?? is it hard to do??

anyone reading this have something similar FS??

thanks,
john

5 lug conversion is not that hard at all. Honda/acura people do it all the time w/ ease. you should have no problem. One good side for 5 lug apps is the better chance of rims to choose from

what should i go with for brakes i hope to do the whole thing for about 4-6 hundred.

i would like brembro, wilwood, or some other high quality brake rotors; vented and sloted at least[i have mixed feelings on x drilled what do you guys think]. five lug hubs. then to top it off steel lines and some bitey pads!

any help welcome

:edit:
the two five lugs i can get from my friend are wheels not hubs

I'm working on the same conversion ie 4 lug to five lug SE to TII brakes. The wheel bearings (inner and outer) are the same for all non AAS models (Auto Adjust Susp). All information is for cars without ABS also. The hubs need to be changed, you should probably do the bearings while your at it. The brake master and slave cylinders are the same across the board, it could probably do with a rebuild as well. The brake rotors may be a different size but its easy to get multiple sets of 5 lug slotted/cross drilled rotors on ebay for roughly US$200 front and rear. If you want to go to SS lines then you can get a set from MAZDATRIX or similar site for about 80 bucks. All this (including second hand hubs and calipers) runs to slighly over 500 US dollars, but not bad.

Apparently the rear caliper is identical on all RX7 FC models so you just need to change the hub and rotor (and wheel/tire of course) but it would probably be good idea to swap out the bearings on the rear at the same time.

So essentially, to sumerize, the brake parts (calipers, pads, rebuild kits) will be the same for all rears of second gens not including cars with ABS/AAS except for the hub bolt pattern/lug pattern on the rotors and correspondingly on the wheel and tire combination.

For the front you need to swap the calipers/lines/hubs.

Master and slave cylinders are the same.
Let me know if I'm leaving anything out.

Price list
US$250 for second 5 lug hubs/calipers etc
US$200 front and rear slotted rotors
US$60 rebuild kits for front and rear calipers
US$80 stainless steel brake lines
US$20 misc clips, bolts brake fluid etc

When using second hand calipers from unknown source I would highly recommend a caliper rebuild kit (also available from MAZDATRIX for about 30 bucks) Those calipers on ebay are JDM so they should work but I wouldn't guarentee it, multiple breaker parts available in good ol' US. From looking at them I would say the only difference seems to be they are lovely and shiney with a 5 dollar coat of thermal paint and a good clean.

The stock TII (and some GXL's i think) are better than the 4-lug brakes, they are good enough for any kind of moderate street/track use, get upgraded lines (ie, SS lines) and better fluid, maybe better pads for track use and you've got about the best setup you can get for the 2nd gens, all for under $150-200...
