potenza re11

Personally, from what I read of the comparison test in recent tire shootout, it isn't really better than RE01R it replaces. The test, iirc, had a little bigger tire for RE11, but the time different is very minimal. I personally think it should have done better... noticeably better. Kumho XS won that comparo tho.

I've been going between RA1s, NT05s, R1Rs, and PS2s for my next set of tires. Hadn't really considered the XS.

^Its in Grassroots Motorsports magazine. It was an autox test. All tires were very close. If you can't find the mag, I can try scanning the article once I unpack and find it. Also check out their forums as they had a follow on data in there.

Sadly, we (and by that I mean only FDs) are only really competitive in SSM anymore, and there is serious startup $$$ associated with the class (assuming you actually want to be competitive). Then again, I've heard serious discussions from good racers that a GTUs could be a class killer in STS, but I don't think anyone has seriously tried it. Maybe other parts of the country have more 7s, but I'm usually the only one at events I've been to in the northeast.
Also, I run V710s. Stay away, they are addicting like crack, and probably not the best if you are just starting doing this.

why is that? advent of awd?
i'm not going to win anything. just want to have a good time with my friends and maybe improve my driving a bit. tires are balding so just shopping around. re-01's were a pretty popular street tire so was wondering about its successor

If you are just starting out, go pick up a set of RT-615s. They are cheap, you should get a 100+ runs on them even if you still street drive them, and if you are learning you probably won't miss the tenths you lose to the tire anyway. Go out and have fun! It really is a great way to spend a Sunday and it will undoubtedly make you a better driver. Its a ton of fun to actually put your car to work doing what it was meant to. Go out, enjoy yourself. Its fun to kill cones in anything, and a FD should be an absolute blast.

i'm running the stock rims. searched around on the forums and there doesnt seem to be a good reason to move away from those other than looks. am i wrong? my fd is silverstone anyways and i haven't seen a rim that looks significantly better for my color.

I searched around the tire rack, and yikes, there are not many choices left for stock rims (either 225/50 or 245/45).
I checked discount tire as well.....I'd recommend going with either the Falken 615s or the Kumho XS.

I would go with dunlop direzza star specs if they make them in your size
my fiancée just put some kuhmo XSs on her miata (because of that grassroots article ) and I auto-xed with them last weekend (my 7 needs a new clutch) and I liked them a lot, it's hard to compare to the RT-615s I have on my FC (because of the totally difference size), but I would say their quite a bit better. And the price is definitely nice, I'm not sure if they would beat the star specs in the same size though (the star specs in the grassroots article were the wrong size)
there is a ridiculous impreza (with an STi swap) locally running star specs and beating EG civics on r-comps...
I've heard the RE-11s are nice (about the same as the RE01-Rs... but that's not really a bad thing) but their not really worth the cost especially with the star specs and now the XSs that are as good if not better for cheaper.
