I got my 225/45 17's on 17X8 31mm on the car today and they fit perfect. Thanks Reted and others for the help. If I had to move the offest, in farther would be preffered as they go virtually even with the outer front fenders. Rears have more room to mess with.

Rear is fine, but I still think the front is a little tight.
A thin spacer up front will make them fit easily.

Good job!

I finally got my last set of rims in, so I got a pretty good spread.
17" x 8.0", +27
17" x 8.0", +30
17" x 8.0", +33
17" x 8.0", +35 (bare rim)

That's a pretty good spread for front fitments, and I'll be doing a dedicated page with lots of pics for everyone.
This should be enough data to finally offer a definite answer!

looks like the backspace on the fronts is 6.25" and the back is 6.75" give or take....

Is that from the rim edge or from the tire sidewall?

To give you an idea, the fronts should be about 5.50", 5.75" max.
The rears should stay within 6.00".
So it looks like those wheels are too deep.

17x8.5 +30 both front and rear w/ coilovers
How big of tires can I put under the fronts w/ stock fenders?
What about if I rolled them

And how would those sit flush front/rear?

Thanks Ted or whoever answers my questions,
Ben Martin

I have a car with 20mm overfenders and coilovers. Currently it has 17x9's, +15 with 245s in front, but with 2 degrees of negative camber they tend to wear out quickly. I was wondering if I could run a 17x9 +35 with 255s (like I have in the rear) so I can rotate the tires when the insides start to wear out. Would this cause rubbing on the inside? The current setup does not rub, but did crack an overfender once when the car went off a racetrack.

And Node, looking back through the thread I'd say 235s are about as wide as you can go under stock front fenders, but maybe less, and I could be wrong.

Okay, i read the first six pages and didn't find any parallel accounts to the sizing I'm looking in to.

Will this work on an FC with coilovers: 15x6.5 wheel, 5x114.3 pattern, with 40mm offset??!!

Thanks, Jason

Those are the exact specs of the convertible wheels, so yes, they will work.

I've seen people fit 245s, but guess I'll just have to flare the fronts

dunno, 235/235, 245/245, 235/255 or 255/255
fun time gripfest

Do a non-staggered setup. That's the way the tires were set up from the Mazda, and it makes tire rotation possible, so you can get more life out of your tires.

Running a non-staggered setup also helps promote a more balanced handling setup. Running a stagger will make the car tend to understeer more.

tell me how to fit 245!
I was hoping the 17x8.5 +30 would do it w/ coilovers, what will?

i have a set of 16 inch konigs that came with my car along with the stock turbo 2 wheels. the moron who mounted the tires on the konigs mounted 2 of them backwards, and the tire rubbed the springs on the inside. now i have 2 tires that are complete **** and 2 that are fine. the tires on the konigs are 225/50/16's and the ones that are on right fit fine, no rubbing anywhere.i just have to get new tires, i am going with 215's probably just to be safe, because the 225's on the offset that i have is realy realy close.i am not sure how much offset my rims have, i will have to measure and get back to you, i want to say 25mm? maybe30. i'll check it out and post it. i think that the 16'sm look big enough on my s4. the wheel wells are filled up nicely. i think that a 17 would almost be asking to be bent.

looking into 17x7's only offset options are 35 and 45, too much and too little?

I've got 17x8's with +31mm offset and they barely fit so I think they will fit with 35's ok.

Most likely they will fit.
Any reason why you're trying to go smaller diameter?

That didn't make any sense.
Are you sure you're describing your problem correctly?
You need to understand how wheel width, offset, and tire size all relate to each other.

i just have to get new tires, i am going with 215's probably just to be safe, because the 225's on the offset that i have is realy realy close.
Why not be safe and go 205 / 55 / 16?
That is the stock Turbo II tire size.

i am not sure how much offset my rims have, i will have to measure and get back to you, i want to say 25mm? maybe30. i'll check it out and post it.
I have a feeling you're running 16" x 7.0", +42.
That would explain what the 225 / 50 / 16 would rub.

i think that the 16'sm look big enough on my s4. the wheel wells are filled up nicely. i think that a 17 would almost be asking to be bent.
I think 18" is too thin.
I have a bunch of 17" wheels, and I think they are perfectly fine.
Ever seen some of the stock OEM wheels and tires out there?
There are some 17" and 18" combos that look ultra thin, but they work fine on the street.
Check out the Subaru WRX STi and Mitsubishi Lancer EVO VIII.
Those run at least 17", and they do not bend.

Run 7.0", +35 and it'll clear everything no problem.
