Installing suspension

When installing suspension onto a car do you have to use the dust covers that go on the shock's shaft? If the dust cover is not used what will be the consequences?

thanks, Markus

You'll get dust on your parts.
The dust covers help keep the road goop off the shock and lessen the chance that crud will ruin your struts.
