Thanks for the postive comments.
Yup, the solid is well... solid. Haha, yeah I've seen that quite often. Much stronger than the IRS.

'99 was the first year for IRS. They used a 29-spline half shaft that is smaller than the '01 31-spline half shaft, which is in turn smaller than the '03-'04 31-spline half shaft.

Which is not due to the strength of the differential. It's due to the design of the IRS which uses a "double bushing" setup (one set of bushings for the suspension arms, and a second set mounting the rear subframe to the body) as well as the lousy coil spring configuration.

The stock setup also mounts the rear of the differential from one side only, with a rubber mount. Without a girdle or brace for the rear of the differential, they're notorious for snapping the mounting pad off the back of the thin cast aluminum rear cover.

Not really. Strength is more a factor of the axles and differential and ring gear assembly, and the IRS 8.8" is just as strong as the live 8.8" setup. It's the shortcomings of the mounting system that make it less desirable for drag racing, at least on a 3,500+ lb. Mustang.

If I bought a mustang and put a ls1 in it would be the same thing, who cares as long as it goes fast and looks cool.

i agree... but.. say with me.. Why not turbo the 420?

i for one am doing the ls swap.. but am still undecided on what rearend i want to run.. as i will be road racing (for fun only).. guess i will have to figure that one out later..

need to find me a cheap ls drivetrain tho..

looks wicked, the 8.8's could use a little bit of braceing also weld the tubes to the main center housing because they like to talk out under loads.

THEIR cars? Do the Mustang guys have collective ownership on every pony car that came off the production line?? Ya, I'ld be pissed if I woke up one morning and someone swapped the motor in MY car.

I'd like to have an 8.8 or 9in rear for my RX7. I hope Granny's kit will be ready soon.

I'm just waiting on the granny's kit solid axle setups to show what kind of times they can turn at tracks.

I mean, FB's aren't exactly bad at handling and they have a BAD solid rear setup. Most people end up converting to a panhardbar setup and ditching the watts link but, OMG MAZDA DOES EVERYTHING RITE!!!

Just like the FD's stock computer, right?
