experience with shaving back pad of rim to increase offset

does anyone have experience with machining the back pad of a rim to increase the offset? i am really interested in a set of rims but the highest offset offered is plus 35. i emailed 5zigen and they told me they could "shave extra 5mm the back pad" to increase the offset to plus 40. i wont be tracking the car with these rims, they will only be used on the street. Is this safe?

If the company is telling you that they can do this, you should feel pretty sure this is safe. Otherwise, if the company knowingly sold you un-safe wheels and something happened, you would have a legal case against them!

I would find another type of wheel...

Why do you insist on using this particular wheel?
With so many wheel options out there, there has to be another option???

matty wants the FNO1Rs. Matty just get them in +35. Stop being a ***** (for lack of better words, and want to push you to do what you want). You have seen that it works. You also know that they offer them in 18x9.5 +45 right? They're concaved also. The 18's will probably look better too. I don't know why anyone hasn't got them. I've seen Enkie RPF1's in 17x9.5 and they looked awesome. Saw them in 18x9.5 and they looked like a whole different set up. Hurry up and get your wheels matty. Buy them, and buy them now!

I shaved .250 of an inch off my rear rim mounting pads on my cnc mill to increase their offset. No problems at all. This was over 5k miles of use ago. Most street rims are over built and the Rx7 is a light weight car anyway. If you don't get stupid with the amount of machining, you should be fine. Any machineshop should be able to do this for you for around $75.

18 or 17? If 18s (Best choice in my opinion) you can run a wide variety of tires just as the 255/40-17. I would personally run 265/35-18, because that way you can run RE01s all around. 285s should fit also, but regardless of the tires you choose, i'd roll the fenders to be on the safe side.

update....ordered my 5zigen fn;s thru rishie on friday. went with 17 x 10 plus 35 and having 5mm shaved off back pad by 5zigen. i am going with 255s falken rt 615 tires. oh boy am i looking forward to the task of getting these to fit in the front of my lowered fd. Guys are getting them to fit w/o the shaving and a fender roll....so we shall see.
