Coilover suggestions
Hey guys, my stock suspension is starting to go and I was wondering about a coilover system. Of the guys that have, or have seen how they perform, do you have any suggestions?

HKS has a hiper damper suspension that is used for street/drag.
For drag suspension you want something that will squat the rear end and something that also has a long stroke, so you probably won't want something too stiff.

AND THAT STUFF THATS VALVED FOR JAPANESE ROADS ARE USUALLY WAY TOO STIFF!
there is the HKS drag damper, which is valved for drag/street means it is on the soft side. The rebound is purposely designed for the car to squad on take off. JIC is not a "drag engineered" suspension. It will only make your launch worse, slower 60ft.
why is whenever some one talks about suspensions, magicman and rishie will jump out and push the JIC stuff?
are they all sleeping with the wife of JIC president?

hehe.. my thoughts exactly.
RedX7, I believe the ground control system will work very good for you for street applications. I do have N1 suspension and mind you it's very stiff. Much stiffer than R1 setup, but of course much less body roll and much stable. Why do you want a coilover anyway ? Unless for competition, they are way more expensive than regular shock/spring combo.

I'll sell you Tein also. I'd suggest comparing the two in both price and ride. WE could equally ask if you've compared JIC's monotube to that of Tein. Comparing ride quality on the street.
Magic and I do not work together, BTW. I am a distributor. He can provide any technical support on the product that's needed. I'd say that's pretty comforting being that there's official representation here to answer any maturely asked questions regarding the differences in these suspensions.
It's really unfortunate that you guys will disregard my advice based on the fact that it is consistent advice. We would not sell a product that we didn't believe in. I've found the JIC's to be the most comfortable monotube coilover I've found. All this is with regards to daily driving and occassional track driving.
We profit, minimally to forum guys, from the sale of anything we sell as it's the nature of business. I'm sure everyone understands that. We provide you guys with information based on our research and experience. This may have value to some and none to others. That's not for us to decide.
If you want the Apex-i or HKS that's great, but it's not the best bang for your buck. We can offer those lines as well. It's not like JIC is the only thing we carry. It was actually one of the most difficult to acquire.
V8, you'll notice that I asked some qualifying questions in the post above as I always do. I take consultation very seriously and the last thing I need is for someone to lessen it's importance. I haven't even said anything about JIC in this post.
I make suggestions based on the individual's needs. It would be ignorant for one to put aside a good quality product based on the fact that we are highly reccommending it.

Contact us and compare your club price to that of another monotube coilover that allows full adjustablility of ride height and independent adjustablility of spring preload. Something that won't rust and is customizable in the US. I'm not talking about just changing spring rates either.
I would ask that you guys keep an open mind. Many of you are very track oriented and therefore have a world of options open to you with regards to coilovers. Others have many functions for their vehicle which requires careful research to attain the suitable product.
Thanks, Rishie

redx7, i think you should listen to voodooracing on this one. He did hit 11's after all and he seems to be more drag orientated while rishie/magicman seem to be more in the drift/road racing scene.

I am a grip driver, not a drifter. Magic is a drifter. The JIC's can do whatever you want. It just needs to be noted when purchasing your suspension.
I know for a fact that Ziel Motorsports has enough knowledge to build a suitable drag suspension. Regardless of what Terry or I may prefer, you can easily acquire information as to what springs rates and valving your needs will require. Then relay that info to several suspension companies and see what you come back with.
that's my suggestion. Or just go with a prebuilt proven drag coilover setup.

Do you own JIC coils?
I do, and at the drag strip my 60ft is usualy around 1.67
(I'm not a experienced drive either)
And also, I can drift pretty well with my set up too.
Surely, is all about tuning.

With all that being said, what would you suggest for 95% daily street driving 5% burning ricers driving?
I may at some point do some autocross but I do not plan on doing it often if at all.
Thanks!

I don't think you'll go wrong with any of the selections. I'd stick with the Tein or JIC's and stay away from the Koni/GC combo. Both the Japanese shocks feature larger bodies and larger piston diameters and are valved for their stock spring rates.
I know it's sort of along the "buy low sell high" theme, but find the best deal for your money. Figure out what your price range is and see what each manufacturer has to offer and go from there.

95% street driving, track, and weekend warrior I would say is all JIC. That's exactly what the standard US spec is setup for.
Please don't assume that because they are comfortable that they don't handle on a road or autox course. That's quite far from the truth. Most won't have enough driver skill to match the abilities of the JIC's anyway in stock form. Like me probably. hehe. It's all a learning experience. They definitely help with the learning curve though. hehe.

I tell ya. I've now been on the Tein's for some time and have gotten a bit more agressive in terms of running them on a harder setting. Guess what. After a recent drag foray I left them on their "drag" settings (full soft front/4 rear) and was AMAZED at the difference in ride quality. Very compliant. I'd slowly been cranking them up a few notches and I guess, getting used to them on less than perfect roads. I didn't notice just how severe they'd gotten. Cranking them back down was a real eye opener. Fully adjustables are great! Next it's ride height, LOL. Just had to share :-)
