Cheap Wide Wheels

Alright, here's what I have come up w/:

iForged Series:
18x9: $725
18x10: $735
18x11: $745
18x12: $799
HRE 540R Series:
18x9: $1226
18x10: $1290
18x11: $1357
18x12: $1427

This is a little more than I'm looking to spend right now. What cheap wide rims are there that are not ridiculously heavy. I'm fine w/ normal weight, but I don't want chrome... if possible to get gunmetal or black.

You can get 18x9.5 SSR Competitions from Rishie or the Tire Rack for less than $500/wheel. They don't make them much lighter than that, at any price.

5Zigen FN01R-C, 9 x 17, 43-mm offset, silver, bronze or hyper black. Nice looking, lightweight, and inexpensive...sounds like a winner to me!

Be very, very careful about the SSRs if you're using them on the street. They're extremely delicate. I've already bent one on my Audi. The streets aren't good here, but I never hit anything hard enough to warrant a bend.

Just FYI.

I second the CCWs. Mine are on the way to me now.

I like the CCWs too, but they aren't really the lightest option....

Well, we've heard about bent SSR Comps from Miata owners and now an Audi owner, but not a single FD owner has ever posted a problem with their Comps....

BTW, please post pics of your CCWs when they're mounted -- and weigh them first of course! What config did you end up getting?

Yeah, if it weren't for the Miatas I'd say it has everything to do with weight. My Audi is a big fat pig. But the Miatas make it a bit more of a mystery.

Anyhoo, I'll definitely post pics of the CCWs when they get here. I'll see if my wife's nice kitchen scale will read high enough to weigh them.

I went with 17x9.5 255/40F and 17x10 275/40R. Should be quite an improvement when it comes to overall grip, wheelspin, etc. Plus it'll look a ton better.

I will be going with 17x10fr/275-40, and 17x12rr/335-30
I do not know of a lighter(durable) wheel in those sizes for ~420.00. The closest, is the BBS Magnesium 3 piece race wheel @ 2200 a set. Problem is I will sometimes drive them on the street, and MAG= Broken at the first pothole. If anyone knows of a wheel I can order with a zero offset in those sizes for near that price, I'd like to now. Carl

E, this is a nice set-up, and will give you enough understeer to make you feel confident through long sweeping turns like the "Carousel" @ Road America. 10 wides are the perfect width for 275s in back. The 9.5 wide for 255 will give you nice turn in feel up front. Your rear tires will jack up the car slightly and give your car a slightly negative rake. If you want your front and rear tires to be closer in overall diameter, you can try 265/40-17s up front next time. This will also bring the handling closer to neutrality by adding a bit more sidewall up front (essentially softening the front end and creating a bit more bite for turn in and cornering).

Thanks Manny.

Is the extra 10mm up front (if I go with the 265/40s) gonna give me any kind of rubbing problems or require a fender roll?

Nah...If John's hooked you up with 2-inch offset, 7.25 inch back space, and 3.25 inch front space with your 9.5 wides up front, you should be fine. Try to pick a 265/40-17 with 25.3 inch overall diameters. Tire Rack publishes the ODs. You'll see that 265/40-17s range from 25.3 to 25.5 inches in overall diameter. Obviously, you'll want to stay on the "shorter" end of the range for maximum fender lip clearance...

If you want proof, 93R1 has 265/35-18s on SSR Comps all around. The Comps are 9.5 x 18, with 50-mm offset. 265/35-18 and 265/40-17 tires are very close in both section width and overall diameter dimensions, with the only difference being sidewall height (bigger wheel diameter with 18s). I'm happy to report, 93R1 has no rubbing issues with his setup. He went on blind faith with my recommendation LOL

Those offsets aren't suitable for any RX-7.
