Best FD sway bar mount options?

I've searched and this topic hasn't been addressed for awhile. Are the Widefoot mounts still available? Their web site isn't working. Is anyone using the http://www.rotaryextreme.com/fdindex.html mount? I like this one since it ties the two sides together eliminating the need for a separate sway bar mount brace. I not sure how strong it is compared to others though.

I plan to track my car at HPDE events. I'm not racing, so I'm not worried about breaking class rules. Strength is my primary concern, with weight reduction secondary.

Thanks,
Ken

Just as a suggestion, I'm using the Mazdaspeed replacement swaybar mounts, plus the Racing Beat swaybar mount brace. Straight bolt-in and strong.

If you haven't done a HPDE with your FD yet, I would recommend getting seat time on the track before modifying the suspension.

I've got the Addico front 1 1/8" and rear 7/8" setup with staggered tire size and more negative rear camber.

One of the best setup I have driven and tried in my FD and others if u want minimal lean on the turn, but without the oversteering associated with it.

I am real nervous about going to the track with stock sway bar mounts since I have read here that they are prone to cracking or failure. If my worries are unfounded, I'd be glad to hear it. I really don't want to have suspension parts break during hard cornering at high speeds.

how many miles are on the car? Do you have the stock wheels? R-compound tires?

The stock suspension is great! I agree w/ Mahjik spend the money on seat time.

Unless you are a good driver on R-compound tires, I would not worry about the stock sway bar mounts, unless they are the originals with many miles on them. I have had a set of new OEM mounts for over 3 years, 30k miles, and about 9 auto-x, 9 HDPE, and lots of entrance ramps... No problems with them whatsoever -- but I am on street tires.

Upgrading front sway bar mounts before going on track is a reasonable precaution - I would consider it a safety/reliability issue - it's not a modification that will change the feel or handling of the car.

That said, a novice driver, on street tires, with stock front sway bar - is unlikely to bend/break the stock mounts. Just stay on the track and off the gators!

U forget that roads in the West tend to be subjected to the ever changing platetechtonics (sp?) and other erosive elements that can damage susp and wheels.

BTW, if you think the roads here are bad, you've never been to Michigan.

And roads where there are "winters" have "potholes".

1FunR1,

I know several people who track using the stock sway bars and mounts on the track (including myself). It is a good idea to eventually upgrade them (as it is for many parts of the car) when hitting the track. However, IMO, it's not a prerequisite to get seat time as that's what's most important.

I am a novice to the car, but not to the track. I've done numerous outings in my 350 AWHP Mitsu 3000GT VR4 with R compound tires. I currently run NASA group 3. I'll drop back to group 2 for awhile with the FD.

I will be using R compound tires on the FD. It currently has 17x8 wheels (not sure which brand though). I may try mounting 245/45/17 Yoko A032 that I have in the garage that I use on my VR4. They may be too tall though. The FD currently has 49K miles on the chassis and I have to assume that the sway bar mounts do too.

I'm thinking of replacing the sway bar mounts since I don't want them to be a point of failure in hard cornering. Cal Speedway has a 135 mph banked turn on their oval.

With that in mind, what are the best choices for mounts? Are all aftermarket mounts so superior to stock that the choice doesn't matter? Are the Widefoot Racing mounts still available? What to you think about, and is anyone using, the Rotary Extreme mounts I listed above?

Many thanks,
Ken

I haven't heard about any aftermarket mounts being worse than the stock mounts. I've very good reports on the Widefoot mounts, however, getting in touch with the guy who is still selling them has been the biggest pain from what I understand. David Breslau is the name you need to search on to get those.

I believe Jimlab is currently looking to produce some as well. If you need to get them quick, Rotary Extreme is probably going to be your best bet.

As I have some experience with the "Widefoot" front sway bar mounts. I also offer these addresses of David Breslau, 64 Hodge Rd. Arlington, Ma. 02474 Phone, (781) 254-6022 Or work (978) 670-4910 ext 151 Or email addy of dbreslau@mit.edu These front sway bar mounts are so nice i should have bought a second set just to put on coffee table to display as art...Very strong...As I run the JDM HKS "purple" bars front and rear...front bar is stock +66% in resistance.... I run PFS front and rear anti-rolls with stock mounts with no problems at all. And I run the car hard, very hard. But we did make poly bushings that may distribute the load more evenly also.

the website for the widefoot mounts is crookedwillow.com but they don't have prices you have to call or send an e-mail. mazdatrix sells upgrade mounts for around $97 each, i think.

You can't order them from the CrookedWillow anymore. You have to contact David Breslau directly (as has already been done above).

I bought the widefoots. I remember them being 300. I could be wrong. but I am pretty sure that is right.
