AutoX Tire Questions

I'm running ASP on stock wheels. Last year I ran some V710s in 225/50R16

I thinking of running 255/50R16 on the stock 8" rims. Has anyone done this? What are your thoughts?

Since my source for v710 takeoffs has evaporated, I'm considering Hankook z214s. I want to be fast but I don't need every last tenth (as the stock rims indicate). Is the 214 a good option for me?

Thanks in advance.

Dave

the 255 can be done, but you might have to be friends with a tire mounter. Being an FC guy I can't comment on any clearance issues.

People seem fairly pleased with them. Wish I could help more.

I have no experience with the Hankook but the 255/50/16 size will fit on stock wheels. I used 265/45 V710 on stock wheels in the past and had no issues (other than the long gearing).

You may want also to re-consider the V710, now finally available in 245/45/16 (like the Hoosiers but cost a bit less and last a lot longer), which would give you the right gearing and shorter (stiffer) walls.

Thanks for the comments.

My current budget for tires is about $100/corner. There are closeouts and lightly used takeoffs at that price if I'm patient. New tires and certainly larger/wider rims definitely don't come at that price. It helps to know alternate sizes that will work.

Sandro, do you feel that a 265/45 or 255/50 is a step up in grip over the 245/45 or 225/50?

The gearing doesn't concern me much since it boils down to avoiding a shift to 3rd or shift to 1st.

Dave,

Corner grip is definitely improved by wider tires, but I did not like the gearing of the 265s nor their higher polar momentum. Car was definitely slower in acceleration. Also - although minor and less noticeable - roll center gets negatively affected by taller tires.

I use Hoosiers 275/35/15 now, lot of rubber and small diameter for serious runs, or V710 245/45/16.

Having said that, if high gearing does not bother you and you are on a budget, probably any size would be fine; just buy any R-compound you can find at $100 (Victoracers included)

I'll be there. Maybe with luck I might have fresh paint on the car by then. (It looks like *** now)

I would not run the 255 on 8 inch rim, too much cantilever that adds an undampened lateral spring ... just as you think you have reach equilibrium in a solumn the tire whips the rim to the side. For some reason Hoosiers have been able to handle thsi (guess with much stiffer side walls) and in fact always seem to over size their tire widths. But my past experience withKummos is that they don't like the overfit on rims. Now that the 245/45-16 V710 is out go for it.

I'd heard the same thing about the V710s, but there are some Speed3 guys squeezing 245s onto 7" stockers and I haven't heard any complaints about transitional behavior.
