245/45/17 for an FD rear?

What would be the pros and cons of running this overall taller tire in the rear? I know acceleration will go down and top speed will increase - but by a noticeable amount?

Also wouldn't the taller tire help hook up better off the line? I don't have this problem now (I'm running 225/45/17 BFG drag radials on 8" wide wheels) but with street tires I may (making around 330whp NS).

Thanks for the help.

245-40 would be better, but the taller tyre in theory will make your car slower unless you re-gear... a 45 would be hardly noticable though

any more opinions, 245/45's seem more plentiful

It's a full inch taller, lowering final drive ratio and making your speedo a few mph off. I wouldn't do it for street driving.

If you are worried about traction, why don't you get wider wheels and tires?

also I just picked up a T66 to put on my new street ported motor. It'll end up being around 400-450whp now. I'll probably be forced to go wider in the back, anyone think some 255 BFG KD's could handle that power?

its not a big diffrence from a 225/45-17, it will hook up a bit better, your gears will become a tad longer. if you thing u stay in each gear too long already dont get these. if u are having traction problems then go for them. i woulnt get these if the car has less then 300 whp

Just do it right.

Get rid of your 17x8" rears, and get some proper 9.5-10" wide rear wheels and put 275's on there.

A 245/45/17 is going to look goofy and not really perform very well.

How come everyone always has enough money for power upgrades but none for any mods to handle it?

I knew I'd get a comment like this. Fact is until my most recent purchases my car was setup for much more HP than it had. i was putting down 310 but had a clutch, fuel system, tranny, IC, rad, etc. that could handle 450+. I did all the supporting mods FIRST.

I'm asking these questions to see the cheapest way to get the car to hook up now that I'll have much more HP, I'm not worrying about the bling factor so much, hence the reason "rims" were not my first purchase.

I feel my modding order is fairly appropriate.

So how about this question: If money is the restraint and you're looking to put down 450whp, how should it be done (street driving and stock diff so don't suggest slicks )?

I don't think rims are a bling factor-only mod. 8" wheels aren't likely to fit the sort of rubber you really need, and that's just the long and the short of it. If money is the restraint, I might just live with it for a while with a decent set of 245/40's... they'll work on 17x8's.... and save for better wheels.... or sell what you've got, and go for an "economy", but still good set of new or used 17x9.5's. ... maybe CCW's, SSR comps, or those 5Zigen FNo1CR deals.
