16" or 17" wheels. Advantages?

Can't decide what size wheel I should get. Either

16x7 +40
- or -
17x8 +35

Are there benefits to either size? My only mods are an Apexi N1 catback on an S4 n/a. Suspension is stock, and so are my fenders, but I plan to get coil overs eventually. These wheels will be everyday wheels and what I will be running in the front for drifting. That being said, I will be getting a pair of wheels to run in the back and I was worried about having to get at set of 17x8x and then having to pay more for tires than if I got say a set of 16x8s (sorry if that was incoherent, just throwing that out there).

Um... I'd go for 17s. You'll need to stretch a little wider tire on them, but they'll allow you a smaller, stiffer sidewall, which equates to better control. That offset sounds a liiiittle high for an 8" wide wheel, though.

You'd have more room for tires with a 30mm offset on either of those wheels.

16's are usually a little lighter, the taller sidewalls give better ride, but worse feel and response. They're generally cheaper, but tire selection isn't as good.

17's are usually a little heavier, the shorter sidewall gives a slightly harsher ride, but better feel and response. Tire selection is better, but they're more expensive.

IMHO 17's look right.

If cost is a concern, then Mustang GT wheels fit perfectly and are cheap and readily available. They're a little heavy though at ~20lbs for the light ones, but they're a 17x8 30mm offset wheel for cheap, so you can't complain too much. You can find some good deals on used tires, for instance you can usually find some lightly used Subary WRX STi tires for a reasonable price, they're 225/45/17's and are an AWESOME tire, loads of grip and long life, the only downside is the cost as new and they're on the heavy side.

I had the stock 16x7 +40 wheels with 205 falken tires, and then I put on my 17x8, 17x9 wheels with 225/45/17 Potenza RE050A tires.....it feels SOO much better.
Maybe the falken tires sucked, but it's alot more fun to drive now , because it's more predictable...and just feels better.

Yeah I know the offset is small, but I was thinking of maybe getting like a 5mm or 10mm ebay spacer for them.

I'm definitely leaning towards the 17s, and those stang wheels were exactly what I had in mind... The wheels are looking at -puts on a flamesuit- are rota slipstreams, and I was wondering what kind of lugs/valve stems/hub rings I will need for them?

I don't think you can get a 17" slipstream in the right offset, they're all too high AFAIK. They're not bad wheels, I use some 15x8's as my track wheels.
