The knock value is just a hit count. It is not adjustable.
You may see one or two random false ticks, but if you see it run up much, you need to retard spark and/or add fuel.
You can test it with a small hammer.
Tap the center iron plate, just below the oil filler tube.
The count should go up one with each tap.
