Cool Hyundai Genesis Coupe Project

As some of you may already know, we have started a new project here at A-Spec Tuning. It is the widely talked about 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe. Now obviously it's not a rotary, but we figured this might interest more than just a few of you. We obtained our Genesis Coupe in early-mid March and immediately began tearing into it. With there being such an interest in this vehicle, and it being so 'tuner friendly', we decided to start a little bigger than most.

It will soon be common knowledge, as with any vehicle, that the factory turbo supports "X" horsepower, the factory intercooler is good to "Y" horsepower, etc. Although we are currently developing the basic staged upgrades, we have moved on to the big stuff like a complete fuel system, turbo kit to accept up to a GT35R sized turbo, and intercooler kit, all of which have already been completed. We are also working in conjunction with a very reputable company to hopefully have a stand-alone ECU available in the near future.

More details to follow, and I will be posting some dyno information shortly. We have dyno'd the car stock, stock + boost controller, and in the very near future will have some numbers showing all of our modifications to date (w/GT3071R). Time to see what this thing will really make

Now for the pics (sorry not the greatest, but you get the idea)

Progress Pics

Below are pictures of the beginning stages. As you can see, the stock manifold can use some improving. While it actually appears to be a decent design, we know the path most people will want to take; tubular manifold + larger turbo. So why not get to the point? Also note the clutch/flywheel set-up. It utilizes a dual mass flywheel. This is becoming more and more common these days for various reasons, but can also be a limiting factor when trying to put the horsepower to the ground. Something is already in the works to take care of that situation...

Hyundai Genesis Intercooler upgrade

Here are some pics of the stock hyundai genesis intercooler vs. our upgraded intercooler. Should be a nice improvement. This is our standard core for those building to a moderate power level. Our race core should be soon to follow once we deem it necessary on our shop car.

Genesis Turbo manifold and Genesis fuel system

Our Genesis manifold is in its final stages of completion. As you can see, visually it is very unique. It's design was chosen to promote great spool and not interfere with anything surrounding it. It will accommodate anything up to a GT35R sized turbo. Initially, as noted earlier, we are running a GT3071R with a Tial stainless v-banded housing. I will post some more information and better pics shortly. Our goal is to have a quick spooling, 400+ rwhp kit that is easily upgrade-able with a simple turbo swap, for those looking to achieve more. And the v-band manifold/dowpipe connection will make things that much easier.

The Hyundai genesis fuel system includes our aluminum fuel rail similar to what we supply with our Rx-7 kits, 750cc drop-in injectors that can be used with our rail OR the factory rail, Aeromotive fuel pressure regulator and gauge, Walbro fuel pump and install kit, and all the necessary lines/fittings to make install a breeze. We also changed the factory fuel system, which is return-less, to have a return. This should allow us to achieve the power goals we are looking to obtain.

I didnt think the bottom end would hold much over 400? And there is not much aftermaket for the bottom end yet as the evo x 4b11 doesn't carry the same internals..

The fab work looks really nice!

What did you car dyno stock? I've heard most of them are in the 210whp area..

Stock it was in the mid 190's to the rear wheels. Boost falls off quite a bit up top due to the factory components taking over. A boost controller helped that situation, but didn't cure it. With a boost controller hooked up and set at ~16.5 lbs and falling, we picked up as much as 45 ft/lbs of torque to the rear wheels at some points under the curve. And that's with zero tuning and simply a boost controller.

I'll get the graphs up shortly.

questions:

obviously nobody's cracked the ECU yet, that will take time. so this car is going to sit until you get a full standalone wired up? Full standalone on an OBD II car is not doable for anyone who has to pass an OBD II check.

I am very curious--could you post some pics of the stock Genesis turbo? I see the shorty stock manifold, it looks pretty solid. Is it a standard undivided Mitsubishi style inlet (TD05 maybe)? or does it have the twin scroll design of the Evo turbos (unsure about Evo X)? What are the measurements of the turbine and compressor wheels?

In the mean time, we are experimenting with a piggy-back. That should at least allow for some fuel/ignition adjustments. It would be really nice to up the rev limiter though since it is still quite low for the set-up to make some real power.

Right now the turbo is not in our hands. We should have it back shortly and I will be able to provide you with some answers to your questions.

Hey guys sorry for not being on the forum much lately, I am so backed up on welding and kit orders and stuff I haven't paid much attention on here. Here are some cleaner pics I took of the manifold the other day.

Any updates? Dynos? I am especially curious to see a dyno with just a boost controller to see how it stacks up to the V6 model. If I get one of these, it will be my practical car and I want to keep it relatively stock, but something simple like a boost controller would be fine.

I figure if a boost controller can get it within arms length of the V6 performance wise, may as well save the $$$ and get the turbo.
