Cool

I thought the Lead & Follow was for beginners.
Going to the track for 2 open sessions, is not my cup of tea.
Sorry to be the first on to vow out.

I will take RedBaronII's spot. I'm definitely a beginner so that would work out just fine for me.

Not sure how I feel about this too. Not a fan of the lead/follow, doesn't help much IMO, people are so off line by the time it gets to the back of the pack.

I'd be ALL OVER this, but my 7 isn't up to track snuff, not by a long shot.
I'll try to come out and watch.

Cool

Lead/follow is sooooo slow, it's not even practical.
I will say, is needed for beginners and I was one, long time ago.
You drive faster than that on the street.

I agree, anyway that we could get at least 1 of those lead/follows changed to an open session?

Either way, this is the only way i will be able to afford gettign on a real track all year. No way in heck i can afford $300, heck this $100 is going ot be hard to come by.

I will somewhat disagree that it's needed for beginners, I agree it would be fine and work in theory with a very small number of cars, or multiple lead cars with only a handful of students behind each one. but since they usually just have one lead and everyone goes ducks in a row behind them, the line by the time it gets to the back is completely messed up. Being somewhat new to the track stuff myself, I think it's completely impractical, and am 100% a fan of first time students having an instructor. not only is is safer all around, but they will learn a whole lot more about the line and driving in a single session with an instructor than they ever would in lead/follow. So yes, I agree in theory it could be beneficial to completely new students, especially those that may have absolutely no grasp of a line. but I don't think it's "needed" whatsoever and that the student would learn a lot more having an instructor riding with them.

haha, that being said, I'm assuming that there would not be enough instructors to be able to have them in the cars for this event so that might be why they're doing the lead/follow, which would be better than nothing for the new guys.

I have zero track time, so I think this is a good place for me to start. $95 seems like a STEAL

there are only a few options for track events.

--become a member of MSR and you can drive anytime you want (around $200/month plus $2500 membership fee)

--attend high speed driving school ($around 300 for the weekend)

-- rent the track for the day (around $5000 per day)

--do the focus day ($95) per person

as for the lead and follow. The last time I did this was around 2002 so I may not remember all the details but i think they have 2 separate cars doing the lead and follow. The idea is to show you where the line is and track layout. It will not be that slow since they want you to get a feel off your entry speed. If everyone follow the instructions in the class, everything will be fine without an instructors.....

I have zero seat time so lead and follow will be beneficial for me, plus I have time to make notes in between sessions and talk with other drivers about technique... I am excited

So the only instruction is in the classroom? no in-car instructors?

Well, I was starting to think I should throw my hat in the ring. Then Thursday it decided to spring a coolant leak. So I don't think it will be ready. Or at least I can't guarantee it will be ready before I need to register.

It's too bad, a lead/follow would have been perfect for me to start on. Maybe another time.

For those that want to skip the lead and follow I'm sure you could just forget to go out!

If Steve, Mark or I lead a group you will not be going too slow. We just wana go fast!!

Well my car is looking like it will be back together in time, pulled the old motor apart today (well at least part way, now just have a few days to kill while waiting for the new headgasket to show up to make things look purrty (first time i have EVER cared how my car looks, always been go fast first, look good second and i never made it to the 2nd before lol). Then just pop the new motor together and back in the car.

After that the only other thing i need before going to the track is tires (already got my eyes on soem NT-01's) and an alingment, anyone know of a good alingment shop in DFW that does good work for CHEAP? or anyone have a camber gauge they don't need anymore, i can get the toe plates pretty easy.

So sure hope this works out, be the first time really tracking this car hard and i have high hopes!

A friend of mine's interested in coming out too. It'll be his first time on a track as well and he's in a M3. Is that alright?

yes, that's totally fine. Just make sure to call them and register/pay for the event. We only have 3 weeks left to pay for the track so don't wait until the last minute.
