Pics from my Sept 18-23 Tuning Trip to McAllen, Tx

http://bdc.cyberosity.com/v/Tuning/M...Trip_Sept2008/

Just got back from our 5 day tuning trip down at the border in McAllen. I had a really good time even though two of the cars I was working on were quite challenging. I wound up doing one FD (in Alice), two FC's (Tony's red one and Ty's up in San Antonio), and an Rx8 w/ a Mazsport package. The Rx8 was easily the most difficult given the Microtech system on it and my having to create fuel curves and the whole 9 yards by hand. I spent a day and a half on it. Tony's FC was awesome even though it had a few things to re-work. It took me over a day to do his as well. It's using a Wof3D V4 which I had to create custom spark advance curves by hand then re-do the existing settings and fuel curves. Nice setup! Thank again to Tony and Omar for inviting me down to the shop! I had a real good time and can't wait to go back.

How did the Rx8 run? I'm curious how fast an Rx8 feels under boost with a good tune, what third gen rx7 rwhp figure would it compare with ...

Probably like a 3rd gen with an LS1 running on only 5 cylinders

Then again, maybe an LS1 on 5 cylinders is still making much more than a turbo 8.

Hey Kyle Krutilek!! The man!!

Ya know honestly, I don't know but it doesn't feel particularly overpowered or anything. It was my first 8 to do and since I was out of town with it I didn't feel right experimenting with spark table stuff. I left the boost portions of timing stuff exactly as how Scott at Mazsport configured it. Otherwise, I did go to town with the spark stuff in vacuum and gave the car a bit more low-end response.

The turbo on it is the Mazsport one and as best as I can tell it's a T3/T4 hybrid but I'm not sure the size of the hotside. It doesn't therefore appear to be meant for real high horsepower. I left the boost at 10psi. It gave the car alot more zip. I'd say it's in the mid 200's to the wheels but I don't know.

You da man B!!!

I think the Rx8's are nice rotary powered cars, just a little short on the power. I've seen some dynos of the sc'd Rx8 and it looks to make a perfect road course torque curve, totally unexpected. Turbos are better imo for max power but on a rotary the backpressure and rotor heat buildup (hotspots) is a killer for detonation under continued high boost operation.

Yep I am curious about the negative effects of backpressure on the exhaust ports. Personally, I think the 8 folks are using way too small a hotside and need something bigger because of that backpressure deal. I wonder what t does to the side housings? I think a full T4 is in order on that car and would work really damn well.

Absolutely. I'd love to. I'd really love to do it.. build a nice, good full T4 turbo kit on it.. change out he injectors, use a Haltech E8. I already did the throttle body on it and it kicked in a bit better throttle response and mid-range so I know he's game.
