There are a couple of shops that do rebuild engines. Mine is currently at MER down in Cresson. As for Rotary Performance, I haven't dealt with them in years but know some people that have had their engine rebuilt from there. MER isn't really known due to the fact that is so far out there but Shannon does an awesome job. He will make sure that it is done right. Brian Cain is still rebuilding. As for other shops not in this area, there is IRP in New Jersey, Illicit Performance in California (They also like to do LSx swaps, which MER is fully capable of..... I almost considered going that route.)

MER is correcting some of issues that the previous engine builder failed at.... which at one point will be addressing and probably posting whatever outcome comes from that. Also, the RX7 meet is tonight and you can talk to people in our area to see what their reviews of engine builders are. Supra's are welcomed :-)

thx guys...

yeah i would really like to keep it rotary, but the ls swap is tempting too. a 2jz would also be really nice but i think that it would way too expensive. besides i already have a supra anyways.

i do have some ppl telling me to put a tt 3 rotor in it but not sure what it would take to make that happen. i tried to research it here but havent found anything on what all i would need to get and mod to make it work. any tips?

There are no Houston shops. Just a few people who have rebuilt a few engines, and/or their own engines.

Everyone has to do what is best for them. I know that when my rotary dies I will be going LSx swap next. I do love that raw power of the swap and since I own an 03 Cobra I would love my FC to be faster than my other toy. 2JZ swaps are not really my thing so I couldn't give you any advice on that. If you feel like you should do that, why not, but as you have already stated you do have a Supra. Even a NA 20B would be awesome, and I also know that Shannon can locate one for you and put it in. I asked him about that route as well. As for twin turboing it, I never really looked into that for a 20B. I know that their are a lot of people on this fourm.... and RCC.... that can give you the information that you are looking for. As for cost, a 20B swap isn't the least inexpensive route... and LSxing it might actually be more cost effective but I do understand the passion for the rotary and wanting to keep it that way. Whatever you decide it is your choice :-)
You can also look on nopistons.com and talk to people there if you're considering the LS or just a piston swap. I thought about putting a 4.6L 32v in the FC a while back but after measuring everything I realized I would be cutting a lot away. So now I have a really cool wine rack

yeah, i talked to him about the ls swaps too. i actually just got a big single widebody fd built by him...pretty good work.

as far as the goopy seals, the new fd has them. wondering how much of a difference it will make as far as longevity over the new oem seals. the ceramic are way too much, so im not going that route.

I believe Shortys rx7 is using goopy seals. Subtle improvements were made but for the most part theyare the same.

Please explain what you plan to do with the car...
Like anything you get what you pay for so I wouldn't cheap out on the rebuild.
If you dont want to spend alot of money I would say just sell the car now cause the cost of a good rebuild and or swap is goin to be expensive.
Im guessing your new the rx7 world since you didnt know the difference between goopy and oem seals?
im pretty sure you know a 1j or 2j swap is goin to be alot of cash due to fabrication, mounts, ecu etc.
A good 3 rotor turbo swap is goin to run over 15k ...ive even seen up to 38k on a few sites.
i would never do a swap personally but if i did it would be a 2j or rb...if i wanted a ls1,ls2 etc i would just buy a used vette it would cost less.

If you have the chance I would highly recommend going LS. There are many companies that make some very decent kits and if you are willing to take your time and source the parts you can do it at a very cost effective price.

I currently own a 2 rotor JDM FD, made 703 RWHP on Steve Kans Mustang dyno at 23psi. On a dynojet on the same tune it put 810 RWHP at 23psi. Anyhow the FD with my 2 rotor is fun especially spinning it to 10,500 RPM's but it takes a lot of good parts (Motec, fuel system - 3 intank bosch pumps, custom everything) to make sure its a safe setup. You can easily make these numbers with an LS at a more cost effective price.

Don't get me wrong, I love my FD and the power its making. In the next month its actually getting turned up to see how close I can get to 1000 RWHP on E85 only.

Good luck with whatever route you go, but if it was me and I had to do it all over again I would find a wrecked 2005 and up GTO and go LS2 with the T56 in a heart beat.
