help me park my fd. . .
hey guys, im very new to this area, and wont be here for very long. . . but. . . i cant handle this heat in my non a/c equipped (my own damn fault) fd. im also just tired of "driving" it around. . . it kills me cause i didnt build it to be my dd.
so, im trying to find a CHEAP car that runs and has a/c for under $1k. i realize this is a pretty hard thing to accomplish, but i REALLY need to get the best bang for my buck right now.
the thing thats killing me is that most of the cars i find need "too much" work. it needs to drive, and have a/c. . . i can handle some work, but the school im in demands a lot of my time.
oh yeah, im at sheppard AFB/wichita falls.
i found a 929 in the dallas area that im trying to look at, but realized that i pretty much have NO way to get it back to base. the car sat for a while, so i was hoping i could get it to run for cheap. . . but i cant rightly work on it at the guys house, ya know.
anyways, just looking for some help. . . any would be amazing right about now.
thanks,
paul

Check craigslist, I just snagged a 1990 civic hatchback with brand-new A/C system for $900. One of the cv joints was begining to wear, so I replaced the axle.
Deals are out there, just gotta look.

the deals i keep finding are ones with minor mechanical problems or something. . . the problem is that i cant tow it back to the base. . . i have no truck. i cant necessarily work on the car at the sellers house either. im pretty well stuck when it comes to this.
Ive got a 1992 Honda Prelude SI I would let go for $2700. Sorry I just noticed where it said you wanted to spend under 1K.

How much of your $1k 'investment' were you realistically planning on recovering? If you can't find anything $1k or less, have you thought about taking out a personal loan for $3k to purchase something a bit more road worthy?
Depending on how long you need the car for, it may not cost you too much total interest paid. The depreciation on the car over the time you use it probably will not be much as well, meaning you can probably sell it close to what you got it for.
Ex:
$3000 loan, outrageous int rate of 15%, 5 year term = approx $72 monthly payment, $37 of which is interest (if i didn't screw up my math).
Say you sell the car after 6 months; interest paid by you would be about $222 (6 months x $37 interest). If you take a $278 loss upon selling the car, your total cost of using the car is $500.
To give you other scenarios, using a $3k loan amount, interest paid monthly can calculated as approx:
11% = $27
9% = $22
6% = $15
3% = $8
If you've got really good credit, a lower interest will lower the interest paid of course. Personal, fixed payment loans based on credit will generally be somewhere north of 10%.
If you have excellent credit, you may qualify for a 0% APR credit card for x-number of months, possibly costing you nothing (in terms of interest) if you play it right. You'll have to check to see if there are any convenience check fees (to access the CC the way you need to).
If you have existing credit cards, call them to see if they can increase the limit (if its not enough already) and what the best rate they can do. Many people do not realize that CC interest rates are negotiable to a degree. They can often lower it a few % points without hitting your credit. If you don't mind a credit pull, they may be able to lower it even further, or offer you an intro/balance transfer rate like 0%, etc. They often do it even if you've had the card for awhile.
Of course, there is the hassle of selling the car in the end, but frankly, the heat in Texas REALLY sucks. I also assume that driving a $3k car is more fun than driving a $1k car for 6 (or whatever #) of months.
Just a thought.

well, i originally took out a $2500 loan to buy a bmw 525i from someone who is about to graduate in august. he flip-flopped so many times on the deal that i decided to quit playing with him anymore. now, im just hoping to use the money to get a few things done, and buy a decent car. thought about the credit card thing, but just wanna get things squared away before i do anything like that. . . i really hate monthly payments!!!

Did they fund (close the loan, release funds to you) already? If not, depending on how long ago the original application was put in (and depending on the financial institution's lending policies), they might be able to adjust the loan amount higher. If it did close already, they still might be able to refi the orginal loan with new terms. It might make more sense than having more than one credit/loan payment (your $2500 loan payment + the CC payment scenario), if you can't find something (reasonable) for $1k.
If they refi the original loan, it might even mean another tradeline reported on you credit report (though the time the first loan was open might be too short to help). The more installment loans (fixed payments) you have (among other things) in your credit history, the more your credit score (generally) improves. Translates into lower interest rates later, like when you get your next mortgage (read big money savings).
I did drive my car w/o turning on the A/C for a whole summer during highschool in '90, but I was lifeguarding everyday, sitting out in the sun anyways. You'll have to decide what is best and more important to you of course. Good luck!
man that sucks. i just got out of the service myself and i tell you after a long day at work you really enjoy a car with ac. especially if u haalot during the day.ve one of them sucky jobs that has you outside

I had the most miserable time while I had my tech school over there lol. Nothing like doing PT when it was 25 degrees and raining. On a side note, Barksdale isn't much better =(

hehe, right now were doing pt in the morning. . . which is much better IMO. i HATE getting off to do pt. . . makes the day very long.
on a side note, i find it humorous watching the airforce run about with all the lightning warnings and the such. they missed all but ONE HOUR of the school day because of a "lightning warning". . . it was drizzling rain outside. all of this while we (the army) are doing WHATEVER while watching lightning strike on the airfield and such. . . haha, too funny.
anyways, still hunting. . . and trying to figure out if i should just abandone the idea of a newer car, and just go with putting a/c back on my car. . . which will be a CHORE and a half. geh. . . what to do. . .
