Smile Built my first Renny motor today!

I'm all sorts of jazzed. Finally built an Rx-8 motor today. Took me about 6 1/2 hrs to do it including bearing press time and minour clean up. Here's a link to the photos. Enjoy and let me know what you guys think.

How'd that engine bay get so dirty so early in its life?

Hey Brian, that's really cool. Neat pics. I didn't realize that the water seals were seated into the rotor housings instead of the plates. So all stock going back together? Those ports don't have the typical "BDC-was-here" look to them. :-P

Nope I didn't do any porting. Perhaps the next time I get to tear into one I'll do some experimentation. The owner wanted me to keep it stock. I don't blame him.

Yep, they moved the o-rings back into the rotor housings where they were ala old school RE's.

Cool.

I didn't realize that the new motors had the exhaust ports on the irons instead of the housings... Interesting.

Yep, it's all about emissions now.

So Brian, how did the engine die?

Well I haven't warmed it up yet but the ECU is holding it around 1500rpm while cold. It starts up fine now but was real bitchy at first.

Hey Brian, I was wondering if the side and oil seals along with their springs and o-rings are interchangeable between the Renesis and older 13B RE's. Did Mazda make any changes to these parts? How about the oil pump and associated parts? :-P I'm curious.

Side seals are not but the oil control ring springs, casings, and o-rings are. The side seals on the Renny are slightly longer and much wider. No interchangeability. Oil pump is different as well.
