Whats this I hear?

I've been talking with a few guys and have been told that the BB T62-1 and T66 are crap!
Good horsepower and such, but I have been told more than once that they don't last long and if I'm really interested in a BB turbo that will last long go with the IHI.
I'm looking at the Turbonetics turbos if that helps.
Is it true? I don't expect a turbo to last for ever, but I want something that is going to last me awhile.
Whats the deal?

bb turbos

yeah, i feel that is pretty much the truth, a 62-1 will spool fast enough w/o the bearings and the 66 does not really work that freat with the "P" trim turbine unless you clip the **** out of it!! save your money and just go with the 62-1 with a"P" trim a .96 turbine housing and use a 10 degree clip. you will love it

What kind of power can these turbos put out? I'm looking for 400-425 rwhp on about 15 psi un pump gas. Pluto I know you have experiance with both of these Turbos, what are your thoughts? How much streetable power is realistic with either one. Any other thoughts?

I heard that there was a guy working at Turbonetics that screwed up all the BB turbos and they got a bad reputation from that but supposedly they have cleared this up... just what I heard.

I would like to hear from people that actually have experience with the BB turbos. From at least 3 tuners I have heard the same thing about the BB turbos not lasting long and cost of rebuilding is almost the same price as replacing the turbo.

Anyone running a BB turbo? What do you do with your car, only street, only track, combination? How long has it been on there?

Yes plz answer. I would like to hear about this to. As i am planning on running a BB T-66 A/R 1.15 tang/divid, q trim. If this is true from what you have heard this makes no sense.. BB turbos should last longer. The only thing that should wear is the acutal BB. And besides i have never heard of an acutal turbo running on the street going "out". Plz clear this up for me.. I dont really want to spend 1700 or so on this turbo and have it blow up on me.

Here's my take....

True BB turbos are those that offer BB on both sides of the shaft.
The ones from Turbonetics are BB on the compressor side only ....and they last as long as the standard turbos. But yet, when rebuilding they're a ton of money again !!!!

Innovative Turbos( Rick Head) are working on true dual BB turbos.
Garret also offers the true BB stuff.

If looking for reliability.......go with big shaft/360degree center section.

I have a TE-63 turbo which was beat to crap for 3 years(ran all the 10sec passes) and it's still alive and has become my spare

T-62 are awesome street turbos !!!!!! easily 420-450RWH @ 16-17psi of boost...

Later,
John D

A couple of the guys from T and R Racing are running ball bearing turbos. Romeo ran 10s all year long with a ball bearing T72. He has had a T66, a T70 and now the T72 Ball Bearing.
He has had NO issues whatsoever with them and he drives his car daily also.

To tell you the truth, he is an exception (in my opinon). I have also heard negative comments on Ball Bearing turbonetic turbos and I would be weary of getting one.

Some have explained to me that the ball bearing option is not worth it. They claim that the ball bearing only helps you on the initial spool up and not once your at high rpms the exhaust gases will keep the turbo spinning the same as any other turbo that is not ball bearing.

When I'm ready to go turbo hopefully the responses from this thread will help me choose the right one.

Anthony

While I'm at it

I might as well ask about the manifold. The T62-1 and T66 should bolt right up to a HKS or XS manifold correct? What I'm really looking for is something between the the IHI RX6 and the T78. I want T78 power levels with faster spooling (hence why I want a BB turbo) I just don't want to spend all the money on a kit.
Any other opinions. Thanks everyone for help with my questions

Hey Freaky; are you sure about the Q-trim. That might make a more lag then anything.. I think you should stick with a P-trim and maybe use a 1.32 housing.

Kevin,
Are you saying that your RX6 puts down 450rwhp at 15psi? Do you have any dyno or time slips? I would love that to be true. Thanx!

No, dyno's are time slips - just a summer everyday street car. I currently run at about 10psi, which runs about the same speed as my old man's Viper. At 15psi, it would blow his doors off. Trust me talk to anyone with this turbo and I don't think you will be disapointed.

It's pretty much known that this turbo at 15psi is about 400hp, and 450 (with ported motor). And also just by the feel you can tell, of course it will very from every motor to motor. But it should get you very close to that.

Poor guy being blamed for an old design that failed!
I can't quote the actual company's names but I was told by someone who use to work there at--->(T...O..T..S) that they bought the rights and all tooling from the leader and originators in turbos even after the design had failed for them back in the 60's or 70's.

I just got my car running again with the rx6 turbo. I have a street port and run 18psi on the street. It feels incredible strong, in fact a couple people that have ridden in a t-78 car said mine pulled much harder. When you hit the gas the power is there almost instantly and keeps pulling. I still need to go back to the dyno to see what my power is, last time I had some igntion problems.
