What is your input on boost activated exhaust cut outs?

I was just checking atp turbo's new VES (Virtual Exhaust System) they are selling.

Basically my question is what do you think of this set up on a street/track car.

I am interested in trying it , its not like the electric ones i have seen where the only time it opens up is when you flip a switch. Now picture this on a daily driving week a barely get into boost but when the weekend comes around i want to have as much power from my car as i can wouldnt this be a great solution to free up a bit of power .
HERES THE LINK
http://www.atpturbo.com/root/releases/release091004.htm

They did dyno test and race proved it works but what about a rotary, the test dummy was a volkswagen golf, by the way.

anywho let me hear what you guys think- street and track use

I looked at this kit a while back, I just dont like the idea that I cant control it when "I" want to open it.

Plus this kit wont allow for a smooth exhaust gas exit...there are electric cut outs that angle the exit so that the exhaust gas flows easily. I think you're better off with the electric unit.

Pretty cool....but I'm with slammedblk7 on this, I don't like the fact that it'll turn open every time you stomp on it...unless you hook it up to a boost controller. But if you're gonna spend the money for a controller, might as well keep it simple and get the electric. My buddy bought a couple of these ---> http://www.dmhperformance.com/ecutout.htm Good quality and nice angles too... the switch is like a window switch, you decide on how much to open.

why not just run a wastegate vented to atmosphere?

I've been toying with the idea of rigging up a valve like that, except in-line with the main exhaust and with only 1/2 a butterfly to achieve some "active muffling" via backpressure and to get rid of droning at highway speeds.

And to the guys that say "not if I can't control it..." it makes a little difficult to tune for if it isn't consistent.

Why not just design a proper exhaust that flows well and isn't a restriction. It's easy.

my problems with this has always been the possiblity of exhaust leak, i just dont think it can seal the cutout correctly without a high pressure source to keep it closed and equally vac/power source to open it.

Well maybe it should be clarified for you. Low boost tuned with full exhaust. High boost tuned with electric cut out opened.

Sounds pretty consistant to me.....

yeah that makes sense if it was in a 45 degree atleast that would flow better

i dont know i might try one of those electric ones to see how well it works

right now i ave a blitz nur spec exhaust and its not as loud as other exhausts, but its very restrictive, even with full 3inch dp-midpipe-catback all 3" to my muffler 4" itk

i just want something that when i get ready to play it gives me all the power i need yet when i a going to work or cruising its as quite as a "bio-economic friendly car" lol

i will see what other info i can ind on the eletric ones

Sorry, I thought you wanted a dash switch to turn it on and off at will. A hobbs switch and a solenoid would fix this, so it only opened above your low boost threshold.

couldn't you just put in a fuel line valve Like on a lawn mower so you could turn it on and off or does it need vacuum to be closed?

I really don't like the 90 degree design of this anyway seems kinda shitty...

Seems like it works backwards to me. Don't you want it open out of boost so you spool faster?

^ yeah it's the wastegate's job to reduce backpressure once the turbo is spooled

i think a 45 degree angle while it would be better, the exhaust is still going to flow the path of least resistance. and a little bit can still flow straight through the rest of the exhaust if the cutout didnt flow enough. i'm sure there is a slight gain to be had with the cutout on topend, how much though is hard to say. i think the whole idea is to keep the exhaust quiet during normal cruise and then when you need the extra power it will open up. i looked into one of these awhile back but decided the effort and work involved wouldnt pay off enough.
