what sthe big deal with the turbo kits

whats the diffrence if i get a kit or piece one togeathe myself... if i know what i want and what i need whats the diffrence?

My guess is that companies with popular kits have proven products, but if you have confidence in your fabrication skills, go for it.

well i was rather thinking that i would get a turbo a manifold waste gate and downpipe all seperate. its a little cheaper... what am i not getting by going the piece by piece way that i would in the kit?

For some people it is cheaper but if you really are not experienced with turbos I wouldn't do it. Not all manifolds, turbos and DP will match together. Manifolds are different lengths so that you DP will not line up with the turbo. Also you have to measure out all your oil and coolant lines.

There are a few people on this forum who have put together their own kits but they are experienced.

If you are asking this question then it seems that you are not familiar with piecing kits together.

You aren't getting the instructions and/or technical support for one. And by the posts you've made it seems as if you needed some help because you weren't sure what lines to take off the rats nest or whether or not to remove it completly. Not trying to flame, because I couldn't tell you which ones to leave either, I personally would have to look at the whole skeem and figure it out. Sorry.. But if you peice together your own kit you will have to buy oil/water lines, a manifold, turbo of course, wastegate, and have a downpipe made, and buy heat sheilding if you want it. Not saying you couldn't do it, but I know you were already having some questions about hoses, etc, before. Or you spend the extra 1k and get everything with less worrys..

its cheaper than buying all of the pieces from big brands in a big chunk, also appealing by having all matching components. And no hassle of mix matching
However many people never even consider custom manifolds or exhaust or custom turbo setup at all. They just thing namebrands
Plus its easy if you dont know what size wastegate to get for what size turbo or even dont know what some parts are.

I only build my own but i have been doing this for over 6 years already. Besides back then there weren't many kits available too.

But for what i get from your posts i would definitely just get a kit. you won't save much trying to do it yourself especially since you never done it before. You will end up spending a lot of time labor wise.

What about having a shop peice together a turbo for ya? Like tell him what turbo you want and wut wastegate you want and have them cut the oil lines and make the manifold.

well heres the deal
my car is at my buddies shop.... but it is a mustang shop.
www.racerelated.com the owner james is letting me keep my car there while i get my ducks in a row and all i have to do is help hime out on the weekends. the thing is is that he is not a rotary guy... i am doing all the work my self and figure out all my line questions etc. he has a brand new t-76 for sale and i will probably be buying it beacuse is a great deal. he is excellent at making exhuast and he did a custom 3inch mandrel bent system on my car. so the down pipe is not a problem. what waste gate would i go with. and manifold recomendations... james is really crafty when it comes to metal so maybe he could make me one... hes a great friend of mine and would help in any way he could... plus the dyno is in the shop and even he cant wait to see it all togeather... i just need some advice on parts to go wiht my t-76 setup i guess.

My advice for your T-76 is don't do it. That turbo is ******* huge! Especially for a 13b. My opinion is that it is a race turbo, like for the 1/4 mile only. It will make HUGE power, but its not very streetable, if streetable at all. Do you know what the specs on the turbo are? Exhaust trim, housing size? yadda yadda....

However, I am looking for a T-76 for my 20b... so, if you end up not getting it, let me know how much he wants for it.

In Australia we don't have too many bolt on kits as the price is massive. So we do everything custom. Custom exhaust manifolds, exhaust systems, intercoolers, fuel rails etc etc etc. It works out about half the price of a kit and would make more power than a kit anyway.

Here is a quick rundown on prices which are in AUD

T04 based turbo - Under $2000
Custom exhaust manifold - $500-$1000
Wastegate - 45mm Turbosmart $750
Exhaust off turbo to cat or first pipe - $200 +/-

A custom intercooler can set you back anywhere between $1000 and $2500 depending on the size and finish you want.

Eh...just my opinion.

Rich, I was at Race Related on Tuesday and I saw a white FD out front. Is that yours??? How long has it been sitting there? I was hoping the owner was gonna be there but it was only James and a kid with an Eclipse GT on nitrous.

Is your exhaust the Apex N1??? And get that hatch fixed!!!

Do you ever go to Desoto or any of the local tracks for the drag nights? Let me know cause I'm not too familiar with the area yet.

my exhaust is a apexi dunk. the hatch has holes in it beacuse i sold the spoiler. and i decided to go with a t04s from turbonetics.
