What size turbo to go for.

Hi people,

I have just bought myself an FD3.

The engine is getting rebuilt so whats the best type of porting to get done whilst its apart. I have been reading street porting is good but is there anything in between street and race??

Also what size turbo to use including A/R specs that will give me 500rwhp on 98ron fuel??

I'm new to these engines but have built a few 300bhp turbo'd french engines so have a good idea how to go.

Cheers

500 HP gets if U run approx. Between 1.5-2 bar of boost. It will kill your engine on 98 octane. You don't need too much HP for street. 400 HP is more than enought. Run 1 bar on T60-1, T62-1, T04, T61 and be happy on 98 octane.

I think 0,8-0,9 A/R is good for street and 1 is good for street/streep, 1+ for streep only.

Thanks, i'll get looking for a turbo then.

Had my eye's on a To4S with a 60 trim wheel, wasn't sure of the exhaust side as it wasn't advertised but got me thinking.

T04S is T58. It's not a perfect choise for 13B. Look on T60-1 or T61 with 1.0 A/R of hot side.

I'll be going apexi PFC as a local tuner in the UK knows how to set these up which will make mapping cheaper and easier.

You say t04 turbo but there are that many out there with different specs and different A/R ratios hot and cold side.

Any of the turbo's funklove mentioned will work for 400 wheel hp at around 1 bar except he mentioned T04 which is a family and not a turbo. All the other turbo's (T60-1, T62-1, T61) are in the T04 family. T04S is a compressor cover/housing, not a turbo although common in the rotary community the T04S name is used to describe a 60-1 turbo. All the afomentioned turbo's use a T04S compressor cover. Its a 4 inch inlet and 2.5 inch disscharge with an A/R value of .7. For the power levels your looking for (roughly 400 hp at the wheels at 14~15 psi of boost running 97 oct) look for a T4 p-trim turbine. Turbine housing choice will be determined by how much money your looking to spend on your set up, mainly your manifold decision. A properly divided manifold with a divided turbine will yield faster spool response AND more power when compaired to an equal A/R non divided manifold and turbine. Notice I stated properly designed manifold. The divided system will be more expensive. If you wish to spend the extra money and go divided look for either a .84 or 1.00 A/R turbine. The smaller A/R spooling faster. If you go with a less expensive cast collected type manifold, go for either a .81, .96 turbine.

You have other choices for turbos that perform roughly the same like Gt35R, Gt40R, blowzilla (Gt35R compressor in a T4 frame), T04R etc etc. I suggest you do a lot of reading here on the forum and use the search fuction.

For 500 hp at the wheels, you'll need to run high boost (over 1 bar or 14.7 psi) will is not safe to do with only 98 oct gas. I has been done, but I wouldn't recommend it. You *might* be able to put down over 500 hp at the wheels running 1 bar if you go full race set up. Run a full bridge port and a really really big turbo and its possible to put down that power on 98. It'll be a nightmare to drive on the street though and lag like a ****. Which doent make much sence, if its going to be a drag car, why only run 98 fuel??

I just thought I'd mention, theres guys running in the 11's making at around 400wrhp. Theres supposedly a guy that ran 10's with stock FD3S twins which couldnt be putting down more then 370 ish at the wheels. He must be one hell of a driver....... Just pointing out that these cars are light weight, and combine that with a pretty high redline (7~9K) and pretty low final drive (4.1) and a rev happy engine makes for a fast street car.

Thats an excellent read cheers for that, I'll be going tubular split manifold with an external wastegate.

If I can get 11's with 400rwhp I'll be happy with that.

Thanks again and I'll get reading.

T04S is a compressor cover. again, 4" inlet 2.5" disscharge 0.7 A/R Used on MANY T4 frame sized turbo's from t58, 60-1, 62-1, T61, T64,T66, GT35, GT35R and a few more like the T04R. Like I also said, the T04S is also a name commonly used by the Rx-7 community as a 60-1 (in other words, if you see someone saying "I have a T04S turbo on my 13b REW FD" they most likely mean a 60-1. The TS04 is a different turbo all together in the "T" series of turbo's. Its the smallest and uses the T04S comp cover as well. The T-series goes like this... TS04, T61, T64, T66 then from here the turbos use a larger comp cover T70, T72, T76. Theres a few other turbo's that should be in here or there that are newer.
