Vacuum caps
Vacuum caps
Hey guys...I'm trying to get things together for my single turbo install, and I just wanted to know where you guys get the caps for the vacuum hose nipples. What size, how many, and where's a good place to find them? Also where can I find the block-off plate for the rear oil passage? I *think* that's about all I need, but if you guys can think of anything else, that would be great!
Thanks!
Thanks!
just dont get the shinny polyurethane caps. They expand way to much when exposed to heat and can pop off. The rubber ones seem to be a better solution.
They usually have bins full of them or little variety packs.

My experience is the rubber ones degrade very fast in the engine bay heat.
The vinyl ones are more heat resistant by a wide margin, but they don't have quite the elasticity the rubber ones do so I use superglue and zip ties with them.
Silicone rubber caps are available from anywhere that does or sells powdercoating supplies (Eastwood?) as that is what powdercoaters use to cover threaded/machined studs on powdercoated parts as it can resist the heat of the curing lamps. This non-reinforced silicone is weak against tearing and prone to oil degredation, but it had good elasticity and high heat capabilities.
I have also taken small sections of stronger high quality silicone hose and filled one end w/ silicone sealant to make caps. A quick trim on the ends w/ a razor and it looks and works very well.

McMaster-Carr to the rescue again. I've used their silicone caps for years. They won't dry out, crack, and shrink like standard rubber caps.

Definitely don't use standard rubber caps, they won't last very long at all. I have never had any luck finding a good source for high quality silicone vacuum caps.
I have done the same thing and it seems to work OK. What I usually do it go to the hardware store and find a shouldered bolt that is a nice tight fit in the silicone hose I am using. I then cut off the threaded porting and insert the bolt into the hose. Add a zip tie and you have a bullet-proof vacuum cap. Yeah, it doesn't look super professional, but hey it works great. I also do the same thing for capping off the AST coolant connections.
