upgrading to 60-1

Hey, I have the generic to4b that sells on ebay for $400.

1.15Ptrim and a standard .60 ar compressor.

can I upgrade it with this kit??

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33742

$200 seams pretty good for all the parts I need.

I was quoted for about $400 from turbonetics and cheep turbo.

Good and cheap upgrade.... as long as your turbo has a dynamic seal and the new back plate is dynamic also.... If you have carbon and the upgrade is dynamic or vis versa you'll need more parts.

That's a killer turbo although it's not a 60-1. It's a BorgWarner S200. It's VERY good! You will not be disappointed.

I've got the 60-1 HI-FI, and I love it. Full boost by 3800rpm. Yours will spool a bit more slowly, but you'll be happy for that 350-400hp range.

whats the differences between the 60-1 62-1 and this borg warner s200?

how do I find out what kind of seal my turbo has?

The box that my turbo came in said Borg Warner Turbo, but it is the generic t04 sold for rx7s on ebay.

a couple of people on the board have this exact turbo im sure somebody knows what seal it has.

60-1

The BorgWarner s200 is a garrett 60-1 generic equivalent. (as are many companies Garrett clones, Turbonetics, Innovative, Majestic, AirResearch, etc ALL use Garrett parts. Very few companies have turbo parts exclusive to them. EX: Turbonetics ceramic ball bearing thrust sets, R-trim turbine, etc. Some use Garrett compressor wheels but with there own company compressor housings with their logos on them {like BorgWarner, AirResearch etc.})

Going from the pictures alone, the parts are genuine Garrett parts. That is a Garrett T04s .7 A/R compressor housing and a Garrett ductile iron back plate. ( I currently have these exact parts sitting beside me now that I get from Garrett) I know of no other turbo supplier offering a ductile iron backplate, most are cast aluminum or billet aluminum. Garrett also offers billet aluminum for additional cost.

The seller also states that’s these are all Garrett parts.

Also using the pics as a reference it’s a dynamic seal backplate (as is the Garrett back plate). Make sure your current turbo uses a dynamic seal. The other alternative to a dynamic seal is carbon, these are older types of seals but are still used in cheaper turbo builds and / or used in turbo systems that use a draw through carb set up. The carbon seal prevents fuel from entering the turbo bearings and diluting the oil. To determine which seal you are running pull the back plate off (which means the compressor housing and compressor wheel need to be removed also) and see if there’s a little black seal pressed into the backplate. If it’s dynamic there is no seal at all except a collar with holes in it on the shaft, dynamic seals use boost pressure and centrifugal forces to prevent oil leaks. If you have a carbon seal you'll need a dynamic seal collar to make it all work with the new compressor, backplate and related parts.

QUOTE IAN: {Ok stupid question.

Well, first off it was never available with ball bearing center cartridge originally. It would have to be a retro fit to a GT series center (which wouldn't make sense, cause the newer GT turbos are more efficient), or Turbonetics BB center. I believe Innovative offers a full BB also. I've never had a Turbonetics or Innovative BB turbo in my hands, but I believe they use stock Garrett centers with machining done to them, so out side you could'nt tell if it were BB or not. You'd have to pull the comprerssor side apart and get at whats behind the backplate to tell. The Turbonetics BB centers arent a full BB unit. It uses an angular ceramic ball bearing for thrust and compressor support, but the rear bearing is still a standard bronze sleeve type bearing. So it will spin more freely then a standard bearing turbo, but not as well as a full ball bearing. Chances are you won't see a BB 60-1, for the money you could get a NEW GT series turbo, so It doesnt make much sense. maybe some one else in here can chime in about knowing if its a BB or not.
