upgraded oil cooler causing car to run a lot hotter?

I have just installed a fluidine oil cooler after i had my engine out and i finally have everything back together and running and my coolant temps are 117C on the highway way higher then before. this oil cooler was so big the only place i found room to mount it was behind the bumper between the radiator and the intercooler. could the hot air from the oil cooler be blowing on the radiator causing the car to overheat maybe?

You need to duct everything and force the air through the heat exchanger. It's best to get the right sized cooler(s) so fresh ambient air if being forced through them. Ducting to ensure all air is going through the exhanger is usually the best option. You may need to rethink about running the current cooler you have.

The most ? oil cooler install I ever heard of.
You should never do work or mod on any car if you do not know what you are doing.
You just gravely violated that rule.

Was it actually an upgrade? OEM oil coolers are extremely good for their size.

at this point its not, the car is running hotter. its very large (thick) it came with a filter relocation kit and holds almost 2 qts of oil. bottom line is i need to know if it being mounted infront of the radiator can raise coolent temps.

Can you post pics of how this is mounted, and actual dimensions of the oil cooler?

It sounds like your water temps have risen because of where you mounted your oil cooler. Not only have you severely limited the air flow going through the oil cooler, but you've also raised the temperatures of the air going through it.

Oil temperature plays a huge role in engine cooling on a rotary, 117°C for water temps is WAAAAAYYYY too high! Get rid of that "upgrade" unless you feel like upgrading your engine (by way of a rebuild) too.

Fyi - surface area matters much more than depth when it comes to cooling, it's all about heat exchange through air flow, if the air can't effectively penetrate through your cooler than you're just wasting space and creating a heat sink.

so to cool off the oil further you moved the side mount oil coolers into a massive front mount oil cooler... to top it off you have a front mount intercooler on the car.

grats on doing everything completely the wrong ******* order!

i was running out of time to get my car together before i moved and i couldent find a way to fit it in the corner where the old one was cause of how thick it is. I guess its pretty obvious i need to re engineer my mounting

Honestly I'd say just scrap that cooler all together, go back to your stock one (or R1 coolers if you can get them) and take it as a lesson learned. DO NOT DRIVE WITH CURRENT TEMPS! If you're lucky than you haven't warped anything yet, and you won't need to do a rebuild because of this oil "cooler".

What was the reason to "upgrade"? Was your oil temp too high?

I'm thinking the air pressure drop across the cooler is too high, if it's really thick.

That'll starve the radiator of cooling capacity for sure.

my turbo was burning up i thought it would help keep the oil cooler if i upgraded I bought it from somebody on here who had it on there rx7 i haven't driven it much since its been together and it seems to run fine and doesn't smoke so im thinking i haven't damaged anything yet but i guess you never know.
